Petyr Baelish

[personal profile] wizzardly 2016-04-23 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
((continued from here))

Ah, but you're forgetting the very important third option. [Rincewind wags a finger at Petyr with fake cheer.] And that is stay quiet, become boring, and enjoy the relative peace of his lost interest in me. A strategy I plan to employ starting...

[he glances down at his naked wrist, as though telling time with the faint hairs there.]

...now. Anyone who's taken a good look would have to agree I'm remarkably unremarkable, and with immortality already as boring as I have to imagine it is, it should be no time at all before he's moved on to his actual enemies. There are plenty of fools here eager to fight and die against him; I imagine he'll be busy.

Besides - [Rincewind stretches and worms his back against the wall as if getting comfortable] - subtly stirring the pot is all well and good, but the moment you become too obvious you've just given your enemy reason to bring a hammer down on your fingers. To be honest, I'm not sure what has you so convinced I'm a man eager to have a part in anything. You'll find, Lord Baelish, that what I am is a mule more convinced by the stick than the carrot, and if there's anything that angel has, it's a very large stick.

You are so hopeful that this is what will come to pass, and I will tell you that you have a better chance of being ported out than you do of that man's interest wavering. You interfered in his business. You did something that will make him interested in you. And that is not something he will forget no matter how boring you try to become. This man, this devil is the most feared, most notorious imPort for a reason.

[ Petyr shrugs with a nonchalant air about him. ]

If you are content to be a slave at his beck and call, the ass fearing the stick and hoping every day for it to be over, be my guest. All I am saying is that I could help you find a way out of it.

[ He trails off to let that offer of assistance linger. The wise choice, however, would be to not accept the it, Rincewind. Because this will probably come back to haunt you when Petyr has to weigh the choice between who is a more useful ally -- you or Lucifer. ]

[personal profile] wizzardly 2016-04-25 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, well, I think you're wrong.

[a petulant, admittedly uninspired comeback. But if that were true - entirely true - then Rincewind wouldn't have the twitch in his jaw that he's displaying now, nor the miserable, hunted look rimming his eyes.

And he certainly wouldn't ask this next question, damning in its naked interest.]

How would you do that, exactly? - Better yet, why?
baetiful: ([ 19 ])

[personal profile] baetiful 2016-04-26 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot tell you the how without knowing more about the enemy in question. And I cannot learn the enemy in question from here. In this room. With the tiny collection of colorful balls at its center. But I can assure you of my success rate. I accomplish all that I set out to do.

[ Which may wind up not helping you in the end, Rincewind. But Petyr won't spin it that way. ]

As for the why, it is simply this: I despise men like Lucifer. Men who flaunt their power and seem to believe they are untouchable. Strength does not come from fear. It comes from knowledge and understanding. Liberating you from him would give me no greater satisfaction.

[ And that seems like a better argument than Petyr trying to claim deep friendship with the very skeptical Rincewind. It seems more an answer the wizard would accept without question. ]
wizzardly: It's a rough universe. (Tough buns.)

[personal profile] wizzardly 2016-04-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[it's certainly a better route to take than any involving outright altruism, which Rincewind would have laughed at before finding a way onto his feet and out of the room. He's met one entirely selfless person in all his life, and that person was an cloud-headed idiot. A lovable, noble idiot with uncanny luck, but an idiot all the same.

Lord Petyr Baelish, whatever little else Rincewind knows of him, is not an idiot.]

...And in return?

[because there's always that. Always. Yet again, it is not a question the wizard would even be asking if he weren't actually hooked on the fishing line.]
baetiful: ([ 07 ])

[personal profile] baetiful 2016-04-27 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
In return, I wish to know all you know about him. How you came to be involved and what you know of his power. Anything and everything. And everything you learn from here on out.

[ Knowledge is power. And considering Lucifer is one of the most feared imPorts, Petyr wants to know what he can about this so-called devil before he engages him himself. ]
wizzardly: (Right then.)

[personal profile] wizzardly 2016-04-27 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah. There it is.

Rincewind closes his eyes - only a moment, and only because the Luggage is within calling distance - and considers the prospect. Honestly, he doubts Petyr will be able to do anything. The man hasn't shared his abilities with Rincewind, but the wizard can't imagine they measure up enough to matter. Not in the face of what he knows of the angel. A proper fight is out of the question.

On the other hand, supposing the noble could help somehow - what is the price being paid, really? A bit of information? And how much, well, that's still something Rincewind can control. He might have to let on about his own little ability - or at least the aspect of it which got him into this mess - but everything else will still be his to offer or withhold.

Rincewind opens his eyes, arching a brow.]
Everything I learn about him, you mean. In particular.

[because if growing up in the mercantile capital of your world teaches you anything, it's the importance of laying out clear terms.]

And in return for that, you look into... collaring him? Is that the idea? I'm a bit fuzzy on that part.
baetiful: ([ 40 ])

[personal profile] baetiful 2016-04-29 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
You are probably a bit fuzzy on most things at the moment. Particularly your field of vision.

[ Would he even remember the arrangement in the morning? Well, Petyr would continue forward regardless. ]

In return for your information about him, in particular, I will find a way to ensure his attentions turn away from you. A more immediate and satisfactory goal than the long term inevitability of seeing him stripped of his power, no doubt. But your assistance would aid in ultimately seeing him fall from grace.
wizzardly: and you'll make me wish you hadn't (Lay a finger on me)

[personal profile] wizzardly 2016-04-29 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
...Fine.

[Rincewind scowls under the shadow his hat brim - he's not drunk enough to have misinterpreted that jab - and waves a quick hand before crossing his arms and bringing them close to his chest. Hiding.]

Fine. Give it your best attempt, and I'll tell you what I know.

[and probably he should have left it at that, but drink and bitterness prompt him to add:] I would hope I wouldn't have to tell you, but if you let on to him that I'm trying to wriggle out of this and he comes down on me for it, I'll make sure that wheel spins back 'round to you, friend.
baetiful: ([ 07 ])

[personal profile] baetiful 2016-05-01 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The only failing in my plan would be if you fail in my plan. Which it seems there is a greater risk of that happening. It appears to me under the right bit of drink, you have a knack for running your mouth.

[ He steps closer. It's casual, but the threat in his stance cannot be ignored -- especially for Rincewind, a man so well-versed in trying to evade threats. ]

Loose lips sink ships. And should your adversary come down on me for this, then it will be far, far worse for you. Do not speak of me to anyone. Do not even think of me. We never know who can read into our very minds. This conversation stays and remains between us unless I tell you to speak with an outside source. Do you understand that much?
wizzardly: (Not on your life)

[personal profile] wizzardly 2016-05-04 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
[the wizard bristles.]

I am not the one -

[but his interruption dies abruptly on his tongue, swallowed bitterly back when Baelish steps forward. He glowers, ducks his head and brings up his shoulders - but has gone silent. Takes the orders (because that's what they are, all words out of a lord's mouth are halfway orders anyway, but there's nothing 'halfway' here) with pinched lips and tense muscles and little else. Yes, he can read a threat.

Rincewind holds Petyr's gaze for a moment's defiance, but ultimately looks away. They both knew he would.]

Of course I do.
baetiful: ([ 36 ])

[personal profile] baetiful 2016-05-07 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Good.

[ He lingers close for a few moments more, and then the tension diffuses as he steps back. Petyr is back to being as amicable as possible. And by that, it means he's really not amicable at all. ]

I will do my own independent research on the man and be in touch with you as soon as find an angle to play. In the meantime, try to not drown yourself -- be it in sorrows or drink. It will hardly be productive if you destroy yourself before I even have the chance to help you.
