At the question, Rincewind rears back like he's been struck in the face with a halibut by someone mentally ill. The mentally ill, in this case, being the woman who just asked if he's ever gone in the Luggage.]

You're serious, aren't you? You really think there's a possibility I would have ever done that. Ye gods but I will never understand you science types. What is it about things with rows of teeth that manage to inspire curiosity instead of proper terror?

No. No, I bloody well haven't been in it. I'm not nearly that tired of living yet.

i had an unrelated thought, which is: what if Sam tries to transform into the Luggage?

[Oh, definitely partial defeat. Mostly defeat, really. Poor Rincewind, but to be fair, he started talking first.

Betty... shrugs. And nods as though he is making a very good point, which he is. Safety is... important. She makes placating gestures, which may not be wholly convincing.]

Sorry, sorry, it follows that if we shouldn't touch it, climbing inside would be out of the question, even for its owner. [There are things man isn't meant to know, but proper terror holds back progress. A beat, and then like she can't help it,] ...But inanimate objects come back out?

[She should probably buy him a drink after this.]

oh god. I don't think he'd be able to, but imagining two of them is pretty scary!

[Rincewind squints again, like he's peeling off the layers of Betty's interest. Judging by his expression, he hasn't found anything he likes yet. He's cautious when he answers, but at least he does answer.]

That's right. Against all reason and sense. ...I can't tell you how infuriating it was, when I first met it. We'd get plunged into some bloody ocean, it would get full of water and seaweed and things, but then when it opened next everything inside would still be there, dry and safe.

[only if she wants him to pass out on her shoulder, but hey, who would he be to turn down a free drink?]

That does seem impossible. [She FINALLY leans away, this line of questioning done. For now. Because what the heck is she going to do with this information? And also because Rincewind is clearly not having a good time, no matter how good a sport about it he's being. She's not completely heartless, only thoughtless sometimes.]

Multi-dimensional, [again, more to herself,] Your world must be... very different. I can't imagine.

[That was considerably more stressful than necessary!]

'Impossible' is one of its favorite things to do. Be. Whichever.

[Rincewind makes some murmur of agreement and stretches before settling further into his reclining pose. If left to his own devices after this, he'll probably end up pulling the brim of his hat over his eyes to take a short nap. After the week he's had, he certainly feels he's earned one.]

I suppose that depends on whether you can imagine a flat world held up by four elephants standing on the back of a turtle swimming through space. [he postulates idly.] I've found some people do take a little issue with that.

[personally, Rincewind fails to see how it's any stranger than a bunch of people from different universes all being thrown together and gifted supernatural powers.]

... yeah, maybe nevermind.

[It's an impossible box, and it can have favourites. If he takes a nap, she'll just get him a drink some other time. The next time he unfortunately runs into her.]

Ha ha, [she says, uncertainly, because they just met and he's probably kidding, but maybe he isn't, because his box is made of magical wood and eats people.] Is this a test?

[No, that's definitely. Stranger. Strangest.]

Oh, completely serious. You're another one who comes from a round world then? [Rincewind clucks his tongue.] I've yet to find anyone else from a proper disc.

[which seems impossible to him. All these different people from all these different places, and not a one is the same shape.]

And before you ask, yes, I've seen it. [and fallen off it, which is a memory he's not keen to replay.]

[He seems completely serious. And very sure. Maybe there's something in the Schnapps?]

You've seen it. [A proper disc.] And the elephants? You- You can't swim through space, you know. There's nothing to swim through.

Would you like to tell the Great A'Tuin that? It will involve hanging off the edge of the Disc, of course, and I imagine you'll have to shout incredibly loudly somehow. And speak turtle.

[his tone could have sucked water from a sponge.]

I've seen it, yes. I had the dubious honor of falling off the edge of the bloody world once. That's not a sight you just forget.

[Does it know that that's its name? So many questions. So many questions.]

But. But gravity. [But no?] But how?

[Rincewind may get this a lot, but really, that's what he gets for doing things like falling off the edge of flat worlds in the course of his adventures. And then admitting to it to people who want to put scanning devices into his Luggage.]

Why wasn't your panel on this?

Mostly because of this.

[gonna be blunt here, Dr. Betty. Also sighing like some world-weary eighty-year-old.

(Maybe some day he'll notice the commonality in his adventures and just take a vow of silence, but then that will probably lead to some giant misunderstanding as well and things will snowball. There is no escape from his own life.)]

The interest. Interest never bodes well for me. I'll tell you what though, if anyone else from my world gets here, I'll point them in your direction first and you can ask questions your heart's content. Sound good?

[She looks a little skeptical - bodes well for him? What does he think she's going to do with this information? - but she'll accept that he's probably had to explain improbably-sized elephants (or possibly a very detailed stress-induced phantasmagoria) more times than he'd like.]

So you're the only... flatworlder you've met here? [Even as she asks, she waves off her own question. He just. Prompts them, really.] No, nevermind.

Thank you for explaining. [For some value of explaining. Guiltily,] Can I get you a drink or something? No more questions. Or interest. I promise.

[She'd worried he'd had too much when she first met him, and now she's really considering that it might be in the other direction.]

...So far. [and he's asked quite a few. Part of him is so homesick he'd be happy just to have someone else to complain with about how poor Dibbler's sausages are.]

[the offer surprises him - the kindness of it - and he frowns for a second before ultimately waving a hand.]

No. No, er - thank you, but I will have to make it home at some point tonight. Presumably. [as unpleasant as the sobering-up process is, slow-going and full of recent memories he needs to get busy on repressing, there's no point in passing out next to a child's ball pit.]

But... perhaps another night might be all right. [even if Rincewind doesn't quite believe her promise. Why would a woman just ask to go drink with him without an ulterior motive? Makes no sense.]

[She nods firmly.] Probably for the best. [She sounds very sure. He... he'll probably be okay?]

I'll look forward to it. I'm a resident of De Chima if we don't meet again at FanPort.

[In an alternate universe full of superpowered people, he is literally the most interesting person she has met. So promising no interest is not the best, but at least her intentions are to keep it.]

I... I hope the rest of your time goes better [than whatever drove him to this in the first place. Psychiatrists, maybe].

But he musters up a small smile, tipping the bottle of water towards her as if in cheers.]

Absolutely. Thanks for this again. I'm in Heropa myself, but I work in Nonah. So between one of those cities we'll run into each other again, I'm sure. I have a habit of that.

[that's the only downside to running away from things - it tends to take you right into something else.]

[and it... kind of was, surprisingly. Odd, but nice. And Rincewind will take that combo over the many unpleasant alternatives any day.]

Even with magic and murderbox, that was a pleasant reprieve from the convention itself. She's probably going to get herself a drink now, though, before she really gets back into things. A mental palate cleanser from space turtles.]
