STRANGE, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN WE STARTED THIS GIG?
WHO: All diplomatic imPorts that have signed up HERE.
WHERE: The capitals of Mexico, South Korea, and France. UN-attending imPorts will be placed in Davos, Switzerland.
WHEN: January 26th.
WHAT: Democracy in motion as imPorts attempt to use their skills of persuasion to convince each government or organization to lend the imPorts - and America - their help. Players may also use this log to play out the long flight over, planning, and other associated activities.
WARNINGS: None anticipated; let us know if we should change this!
Depending on their assignment, all imPort diplomats will find themselves either in Seoul, South Korea; Mexico City, Mexico; Paris, France; or for UN attending imPorts, Davos in the Swiss Alps. They will be housed in the American Embassies and regardless of their Registration status, will be treated as American citizens. UN-attending imPorts will be housed in a hotel close by. Their accommodations will be that of an extremely luxurious hotel, and they will be provided with anything that they should require, be it books on the art of rhetoric, access to state of the art computers and laptops, food or drink. They will also be provided with boardrooms in which the teams may convene to assemble a strategy. Don't be distracted by the free drinks; this is a task that will require clear minds!
After one night of preparation, on January 26th, each team of imPorts will meet with either the government of their assigned nation or the UN. They will be placed at a podium in front of a room full of politicians and diplomats, and will be expected to state their argument. They will be allowed to have an opening speech before each assembly asks each group three questions.
When either the opening speech has been concluded OR the question has been answered to each player's satisfaction, please put QUESTION NEEDED in the subject title of your comment, and we will deliver the next question.
Just remember: an invasion is coming! Even if acquiring the alliance of these governments and organizations do not help with the imPorts' immediate predicament, it will impact the future of the game at large!
Get ready, our silver-tongued imPorts, and good luck!

MEXICO
Team Joaquin/Manolo/Riza Hawkeye
“Ladies and gentleman, as an imPort I must admit there are days when I truly miss my home. Being here in Mexico, land of my birth, even displaced in time, I feel nostalgic. I miss the air, the people, the language… I miss my home. But I also will freely admit that in the time I’ve been here, I’ve been spoiled.
“Never back home would I have gotten the chance to watch moving pictures with just the touch of a button, and in the comfort of my own home. Never would I have had the privilege of sampling the delicious foods from nations all across the world, many restaurants just a quick bus ride away. And never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would ever cross the border into another country by flying through the sky on an airplane. It’s been an amazing experience, being here.”
He pauses a moment and his smile slowly disappears under his mustache. He takes a breath and continues, “But perhaps the greatest things I’ve gained from my experience in this time, this place… are the impossible connections I’ve made- we’ve made -with the other imPorts we’ve met. In time, I’m sure my time would have caught up to some of the advancements we’ve seen in this era, but you can’t replace people. You can’t replace friendships.
“Right now there are over fifty imPorts held captive by the Soviets. Several of them are my friends. At least two are even roommates of mine and Manolo, people we have grown used to seeing every day since we arrived, and our household is all the dimmer without their presence.”
Jaime, Roxas, Newton… Joaquin takes another breath and glances at each face that dares to meet his gaze. Now was when things got really personal. “If you remember your history, there were times when no one in Mexico was safe. We had just came out of the revolution and banditos were everywhere, stealing from villages, taking with them material possessions and destroying lives. As a soldier back then, I was often sent to other towns to help defend them in their time of need. We were stretched thin, but we went wherever we were called. Because people mattered! Lives mattered. You helped out your fellow man and in return they helped you. It was all a matter of course, but we survived that way and ultimately,” he gestures to the crowd themselves, “your country- our country -has continued to thrive that way.”
“We’re here to encourage you to help the United States in their cause. This is no simple request, we know. But as an imPort, I implore you to think of those missing souls that have been spirited away from their home away from home. We’re all from different walks of life, different countries, some even from different planets… but we’re all part of the same struggling family. It’s my hope that you will listen with compassion in your hearts and, by the end of our discussions, you will also find yourself lending aid to our cause. Thank you for your consideration.”

"I wanted to thank you again," he says, "for meeting with us today. The fact you would have us here at all is a great honor to me and my friends." There's a pause, and Manolo unconsciously grips his guitar a little tighter.
"As you may have guessed, I am just a humble guitarrista from a small town and a different century," he continues. "But I also lived through the revolution that many of your grandparents and great-grandparents fought, and I promise you that I understand what it means to put yourself on the line for your friends and family."
Manolo means every word he says, and he makes eye contact with several of the audience members as he speaks.
"I am no politician," he says with an apologetic smile. "I have no speech for you. All I have is the best way I know to express myself, and that is through music. So, please, if I could have a few more minutes of your time, I'd like to share my thoughts and feelings with you all."
His eyes wander down toward Maria's simple but everlasting reminder to always play from the heart. Those words give his fingers the courage to begin strumming his guitar, sending several chords floating through the air. His music, like always, takes inspiration from traditional Mexican folk music, but with his own added personal twist that makes the song uniquely Manolo's.
Opening himself up to the audience, he sings of the hopelessness and heartache that can come from looking at the world, of feeling helpless in the face of tragedies all around them. He sings about how his own heart, too, feels like it could break apart, especially at the thought of losing loved ones forever.
But then he tells about a dream he had, a vision that broke through the fog during one of his darkest hours, whereupon he saw a future in which everyone began helping one another, because every one of them, every creature on this planet...they were sister and brother, part of each other. This simple fact made them one. And that unity made them win against any obstacles in their way.
Then, he breaks into the chorus (which might sound a little bit like this), earnestly reminding the audience that, as sisters and brothers, they truly are part of each other, for good or for bad. That's why they have the capacity to ache for the sake of one another, that's why their lives hinge on the actions of one another, and that's exactly why the stakes are too high not to act. But, most importantly, it's also their connection to one another that gives them the strength and momentum to make the world anew.
Manolo pours his heart out into each word, his own fears and hopes reflected in the tone and pitch of his voice. His powers may be disabled here, but no machine can nullify his sincerity or his heart. He's confident of that now.
When his song finally ends, Manolo’s head is buzzing too loudly from nerves to hear the crowd's response. But he still finds it in him to give a bow, indicating that he's ready to cede the floor to whoever would like to speak next.
Question Needed
“Good afternoon,” she started, nodding politely to the crowd. “My name is Riza Hawkeye. Unlike the two gentlemen who have spoken before me, I have never been a native of this country. I am no diplomat. I’m a military woman. A sniper, a veteran of a very violent war. And while that may make it seem as though I have no place here, I disagree. My past experiences have lead me to believe that it’s necessary to do everything in our power to prevent resorting to violence. Fifty men, women and children have been kidnapped by Russia--because they feel the United States cannot handle the imPorts.”
She pauses, taking a deep breath. Turning, Riza glances at Manolo, then to Joaquin; she looks at her own palms, the frown on her face deepening, before her sharp gaze lands on the crowd. “Are we weapons to be handled?”
“I would argue not. The United States government did bring me here against my will, that is true. I have no qualms saying that I don’t place an enormous amount of trust in them, but I have been provided for." Her eyes travel across the crowd, the expression on her face slowly returning to the nervously neutral look it had had earlier. “I was given housing, work, food, a stipend--there was never a question of survival upon my arrival here. In exchange, I was asked to register with the government, to help should imPorts be needed in times of crisis. Crises have happened--and we have maintained our half of the bargain, helping however we can.”
She takes a moment to gather herself. The Colonel always reminded her to slow down and breathe whenever she was the center of attention--she much preferred her position in the background, far and away in a tower. She shifted where she stood, collecting her thoughts. “Russia eloquently chose to call us imPorts ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ in their declaration of war. I may be here in this world through whatever power the US government possesses and through their own good graces, but they have never stooped so low as to refer to me as an object.”
“Unfortunately, taking on a global superpower like Russia is not something that the United States can do alone. I have been granted the opportunity to speak to you for this reason: we need your help. Violence is not the answer here. Our actions speak louder than our words. We want our friends back, but we do not want to fight. We want resolution through peaceful means.”
“Please, consider lending your help. It is only through your support that we can achieve peace.”
no subject
"Before we get started," he says, deep voice ringing loudly out in the room, "we would like to thank you all for coming. We would like to thank you for sharing your stories, and your positions. Mr. Mondragon, you speak of a familiar history, but your history is not our own. The same goes to you, Mr. Sanchez. For all that they may be similar, they are not the same.
That does not, however, diminish the importance of your stories. We appreciate hearing where you are from, where you have been approaching your current quandary with and, of course, your culture."
His gaze is drawn to Manolo at that, as is the remainder of the crowd. In another assembly, Manolo's song would have been unwelcome, extraneous, but here in Manolo's homeland, in a place inherently sympathetic to imPorts, it seems to have met its mark.
"And as a war veteran..." He pauses for a moment, but lacking an adequate military title for Hawkeye, continues, "...Ms. Hawkeye, your view is a valued one."
"What concerns us, the people of Mexico, is this claim that you do not place trust in your home country. Perhaps you have been provided for in terms of survival, but this war is a far, far greater threat than one to our livelihoods. War has been declared, war between warring nations with weapons both great and terrible. You speak of solving this resolution through peace so, perhaps, you may start with that. How do you propose to solve this situation through peaceful means?"
Question Needed
But she stands again at attention in front of the impassive group before her, taking a deep breath before speaking. “You are not the first person who has asked me this. A comrade in arms from home, another delegate who has been sent to speak with you here--several people who know my military background have come and asked me some variation of the same question. Primarily wondering what good a soldier is going to do with a group of diplomats, seeing as we tend to have,” she hesitates, choosing her words carefully, “different problem solving strategies.”
“There are nonviolent strategies that can be used against an aggressor in conflict, particularly of the economic kind. Russia’s location lends itself to a need for trade. A unified decision to deny access to that trade speaks volumes to how the remainder of the world feels about their declaration of war against the United States and the imPorts that they house. We must limit arms trade, the export of materials that allow Russia to further their own arms research, as well as whatever research they have been doing into the technology they used to kidnap the imPorts. It may also be wise to limit trade of medical technology that could be used in battle, to show that the world understands what that new equipment would be used for and that we do not support it.”
As she explains, she begins to feel more comfortable with her potential solution. “It is also important not to impose economic sanctions that could starve the people of Russia. It makes us no better than the kidnappers. Trade of goods such as food, medications and nonmilitary textiles should continue. We want to discourage violence, but there is no need to put uninvolved lives in danger.”
“There are also the use of naval blockades, which limits the movement of larger weapons as well as large groups of soldiers, though this requires the backup of military forces. Aviation here is far more advanced than it is where I am from, however. I don’t imagine it would be as effective a tool as it is in my world, though I know Russian naval ships still travel globally to transport goods.”
She stops, taking a long moment to acknowledge the gravity of what she next plans to say. It is a rather brutally honest statement for a supposed diplomat to be making. “Perhaps the most important piece of this puzzle is that there are many who will not hesitate to fight if the circumstances truly lead us to a place where there is no other choice. Should a time come when Russian feet land on American soil with intentions to take imPort lives, rest assured that I will be there to protect my comrades by whatever means are necessary.” Riza shakes her head slowly. “If tomorrow morning, we wake up to Russian soldiers outside of this building, threatening you for listening to us, know that I will not stand for it--and there are many others who feel similarly. I am not here under some naive notion that sanctions will prevent the escalation of violence. I am here because I believe it is of the utmost importance to ensure that we have at least tried.”
Riza doesn’t hesitate to meet the gaze of the man who presented his question directly. “I can’t call the means I’ve suggested completely peaceful, but they are not violent. Enacted consistently and firmly, they make the intentions of the United States and its allies very clear. We do not want to fight, and we have the support of other nations behind us in this endeavor.”

Which is why, instead, all the man says before relinquishing his microphone is, "Thank you for your answer, Ms. Hawkeye. We will take it into consideration."
After they convene amongst themselves for another minute or two, a woman takes the microphone, hair pulled back in a modest bun, and voice no less loud and no less forceful than the man who had spoken before her.
"We appreciate hearing your perspective on this upcoming war, of course, but we cannot help but wonder what your further opinion on your host country is. What confidence do you have in America's ability to stand their own in this war, and to protect their own? And, of course, what confidence do you have in their ability to protect their allies?"
QUESTION NEEDED
After a brief discussion between the trio of diplomats Joaquin took to the floor. He had a few notes scratched out on a piece of paper as well, though his points were perhaps briefer than the ones Hawkeye had written out. He had no crowd controlling powers even before their abilities were dulled for the conference, so it was up to his own charm and charisma to get him through this. Naturally, that meant he still had pretty decent odds in getting his confidence across to assuage their fears.
“Much like my fellow diplomat, I have a military background from back home. I saw times of struggle and I saw times of peace. Since being brought into the United States through the Porter I might have described most of my experience as beyond peaceful. It’s very comfortable there for imPorts and we’ve always felt welcome in our home. But it would be a mistake to believe the government and military there have been anything short of diligent in their efforts to remain prepared.” He glances about the room, his one-eyed gaze stopping over to meet anyone’s that seemed to search out his.
“It was a cold war up until the most recent acts of aggression shown by Russia. Cold, yes, but the military bases we’ve seen have always been buzzing with activity. There is no shortages of hands working for the American military. They’ve always been fully prepared in case the war was to heat up, ready to take any actions deemed necessary should we feel that heat. There are also a great deal of imPorts with military backgrounds and powers to back them up, and would willingly back up our new home country and our allies.
“And speaking of imPorts, that leads me to my next point. Technology. It don’t believe it’s hard for you all to imagine just how advanced the United States is in this day and age. Honestly, there are several things about this world that I myself would never have imagined possible were I still back in San Angel, 1930.” He shakes his head, a brief smile rising from underneath his mustache from the tender memory of his home. “This country has the Porter, the ingenious technology used to bridge the gaps of time and space! Nanites, things so tiny I cannot even imagine how they were created, are given to imPorts to help keep us healthy and alive! There’s no reason to ever doubt that the United States won’t be able to counter whatever Russia might throw their way. And, hey! Think about those sanctions we mentioned earlier! Were we to limit Russia’s access to gaining greater technological advancements that America has already made while ensuring we keep our upper hand, we can guarantee the future safety for our country and our allies!”
He’s talked quite a bit, but he’s still not quite finished. “There’s also one very, very, very big factor that I believe anyone can see as a reason to place confidence in the United States, and that factor is… money.”
He lets that hang in the air for a moment, then continues. “America has money. The government has a lot of money. Consider just what they shell out every month to keep imPorts afloat alone; we’re guaranteed comfortable housing, set up with a steady job, get a fairly nice stipend if we register, not to mention the events held for us during registrations. We’re practically spoiled because the government feels it owes us for bringing us here, and believe me it does, but what gets me is, and hear me out,” he pauses again, “... the native citizens of the United States never even bat an eye. I’ve never had any natives come up to me and demand to know if I’m spending my money wisely or wasting away their tax dollars. They recognize that their government has the money to take care of us without putting them in dire straits. It’s a working system, and you know they have to have plenty of cash if they’re going to keep up with this even during times of war.
“So, knowing all of this, of course we have confidence that the American government has the power and the will to protect itself and its allies. With money, technology, and a sizable military, on top of our own willing to step in and help, there’s very little that could make anyone believe the United States won’t be coming out of these hard times strong and dignified.”
FINAL QUESTION
That is the figure who takes the microphone next, voice low, gruff. "You have spoken of political action, and of America's preparation. Now, we ask you of your preparation and dedication. What do you believe your community can bring others in this time of war, and in such times, how do you propose handling those who have brought nothing but death to the American people?"
OOC: You may either respond to this last question and leave it at that, or have your characters come forward to state their conclusion. Either way, this is the last NPC tag you will receive in this thread! After the meeting has been concluded, the imPorts will be thanked for their time, and they will extend an invitation to stay within Mexico's borders as long as they are legally permitted to in order to see more of their country and culture.
This particular group will also receive the following closing statement before they bid the diplomats to leave: "And, Mr. Sanchez, while it is highly unorthodox to prove one's point via song during a diplomatic address, we do not doubt your talent. We hope that one day you will be able to visit our fine country underneath more peaceful circumstances, in which case you will be most welcome to bring your guitar along."

Like with the first two questions before, the three of them quietly consulted with one another for a few moments. Finally, Manolo stood with his own piece of paper and cleared his throat. As he did so, he tried to remember some of the pointers Joaquin gave him before this meeting ever started. Stand up straight, speak slowly, end your sentences with a low, definitive tone…
“Having only been here since October,” he began, “I am what you may call one of the newer imPorts. But when it comes to a question such as what imPorts can contribute, even someone new such as myself feels overwhelmed with the possibilities.”
He pauses here -- not necessarily for effect, but so he can take a deep breath and collect his thoughts.
“Anyone who watches the news probably knows that we imPorts never sit idle when other people need help,” Manolo continues. “The most recent time is when Pan claimed Heropa by turning it into a thick forest. Almost immediately, those who were able made preparations to hunt Pan down and set things right, and they won despite all of the obstacles they met along the way. Before that? They were among the first responders when downtown Heropa caught on fire. They worked together to track down the ones responsible, even after many of them were hurt or killed by those same people. And these are just two examples that happened within the past four months. Even as we meet here today, many imPorts back home are anxiously searching for ways to rescue their friends and family who have been kidnapped. They will play an important role in getting them back, I know it. I would stake my life on this.”
Manolo glances at his notes again before remembering to straighten his posture.
“We also have excellent tacticians, incredible people who are very good at learning from past mistakes and coming up with effective ways to turn exposed weaknesses into new strengths,” he adds. “The imPort-led group RISE was made in order to fight against the rare few among us who choose to wreak havoc, and they cooperate with local law enforcement to protect the peace, including in response to the horrible gas attacks in August. Also, my first swear-in during October had very tight security, including these amazing robots, in direct response to past attacks that targeted imPort-related events like these swear-ins. Just as many imPort had predicted, this event was attacked, but we were ready this time! And I’m happy to say we had no casualties and no injuries, thanks to these stronger securities and the fast action of imPorts.”
Earnestly looking at the audience, Manolo’s expression brightens as he thinks on all of the people he’s met in this world.
“Even before the Porter gave them powers, a lot of these imPorts did wonderful, important things back in their homes,” he points out. “Courageous soldiers, brilliant engineers and scientists, skilled doctors and healers...these are just a few of the kinds of people in our community. Now they search for ways their new powers and abilities might be useful to anyone they count as friends and allies. I have seen for myself that many imPorts simply can’t ignore cries for help.”
It’s at this point Manolo pauses, his expression growing more somber.
“You are right to point out that a few imPorts have only brought destruction and death into the world,” he concedes. “This is something that causes both natives and imPorts a lot of grief, and it’s also something most imPorts, good imPorts, are quick to handle once a criminal shows their true colors.”
Inwardly, Manolo wonders if he’s the best person to answer this question, but seeing Joaquin and Riza handle themselves gives him the encouragement to at least try. For a moment, he tries to think of Maria -- bold, strong, brave and beautiful. And that gives him the strength to push through.
“From what I’ve come to understand during my time here, we ask and re-ask ourselves what should be done with such villains,” Manolo continues. “So far, we haven’t found an answer that everybody is truly happy with, but I think something many agree on is that criminals like Pan and Crane should be tried and punished in a way that satisfies justice while following American laws and customs. To me, this means investigation with the police, a judge and jury, and serving time in prison. We have the technology to nullify powers, and the means to keep them imprisoned, and these are things we should take advantage of. On the other hand, if the laws made by the American government allow them be released, they must then live with an entire community of imPorts who can and will find ways to track their every move. It is not a perfect system, but it seems like it could be a fair one. This, I think, is how a society that respects life is supposed to work, even during times of war.”
Team Dooku/Lancer/Max - [QUESTION NEEDED]
”Buenos dias a todos ustedes, muchas gracias por recibirnos y por su gentil hospitalidad en su maravillosa capital.”
[Rough translation: “Good day to you all, and thank you for receiving us and for your gracious hospitality in your beautiful capital.”]
The Count is an old hand at rapidly learning key phrases in new languages before diplomatic events, the better to charm his hosts, and has rehearsed his pronunciation before the meeting. Despite having less than 24 hours of time to prepare, his delivery is flawless. He would give the entire speech in Spanish if he could pull it off, but reverses to
Galactic BasicEnglish for the remainder of his time at the lectern."I and my fellow imPorts come before you today as friends and allies of Mexico. We do so to ask for your help. As you are no doubt aware, the Soviet Union has launched an unprovoked war of aggression upon our community, and on our gracious hosts in the United States. More than fifty of our friends and neighbours have been seized from their homes and workplaces without charge or trial. The taken include children, as well as heroes of unassailable virtue. We fear they are being held in degrading conditions, made to suffer simply for existing. They may yet be subjected to torture, brainwashing, execution or even worse. The Soviet government has proven in both deed and statement that they see imPorts as living weapons: completely without rights or personhood, property to be manipulated at will. The situation is nothing short of outrageous."
Dooku steadily drips more and more thunder into his voice as he goes on, building up to a declarative boom upon the word 'outrageous,' aiming to stoke anger and disgust among the audience. He knows that outrage has been the reaction of the Mexican public to the kidnapping, and he means to use that. Upon concluding his condemnation, he pauses for a moment before dropping his voice down to a softer, more earnest note.
"This is only the beginning. Even now we brace for further aggression, while our fellows scour the globe for our missing friends. It is our fondest hope to end this injustice without great violence, but we must also confront the facts before us. Our enemy will not stop until every imPort has been forced into their possession. They will not relent until they have brought their rival the United States low. And their aggression may yet reach into other countries besides. The Soviets have so often demonstrated their enthusiasm in forcing the ‘benefits’ of their system upon others."
As have the Americans, but never mind that. The important thing is to sprinkle the idea of Soviet global domination into their minds without actually stating it. Fearmongering is better recognized and resisted when it is blatant. The Count’s voice dips down in depth to add more forcefulness to the next part of his appeal:
"I tell you these things so that you understand our great urgency in asking for the support and alliance of the great Mexican nation in condemning this aggression. I also tell you this to demonstrate why any of our allies in these troubled times can count upon the deep and abiding gratitude of the imPort community. All help we receive shall be returned without fail. All debts we incur shall be repaid without hesitation. All assistance given to us will be met with the same spirit of generosity and faithfulness. We do not ask Mexicans to risk inciting an aggressive superpower for nothing, or without any defense. Today, we ask Mexico to stand for their values and their hearts- and in doing so, to prosper from the grand friendship this alliance shall forge between your land and a grateful imPort community."
no subject
Once he is finished and a woman takes the microphone, hair greying at the temples and face worn, it becomes, perhaps, clearer that they are not untouched; they are simply masters of the poker face.
"First of all, on behalf of Mexico and our people, we would like to welcome you to our country, and thank you for attending this assembly. We are aware of the gravity of your situation, and we would like to offer you our gravest sympathies. To have children seized from their homes is indeed a great injustice."
With that pleasantry dealt with, she launches into the meat of their concerns. "You must, however, understand our position. As unfortunate as it may be, your mere existence is politically fraught, and to lend assistance is not only a humanistic deed, but an inherently political one. What is the imPort community's view on how prepared America and the American people are to handle this upcoming war? Do you have confidence in your government's ability to protect you in the future, and on what basis?"
[Question Needed]
Yet when the speech died out, and the rush of just hearing it died down, silence filled the void, and it soaked up every drop of Max’s sudden rush of confidence. What had made him think he’d be any good at this? The last time he’d appealed to another power for help, well… it hadn’t gone well with them. What would make this time any different?
Anxiety wells in Max’s chest, a chill running up his spine and down to his fingertips. When the question leaves the representative’s mouth, he’s almost ready to keep silent and wait for someone else to answer.
...But then again, what kind of appeal for allies would this be if only one person on the team did all the work? If they wanted this teamwork thing to be taken seriously, well, they best start setting the example, right?
Max takes a deep breath, letting the warm air fill him and gather the butterflies in his stomach, then lets out a slow exhale, relieving just the slightest bit of anxiety within him. After that, he looks up and smiles, stepping forward to take the floor.
“The United States has a long history of overcoming incredible odds,” Max says, his voice smooth and friendly, a stark contrast to Dooku’s command over the floor. He was never one to try to talk down to people, instead coming to their level -- or offering to raise them to his, at times. “Even in my world, in any world you encounter, it’s at the core of who we are as a people. Our identity’s steeped in the story of the colonies that rose up and won their independence from one of the most powerful military forces on Earth, and that resonates with us even today.”
He gestures as he speaks, and there isn’t a single quiver in his words to betray the panic threatening to overtake him. To just about everyone in the room, and anyone who might be watching a broadcast, Max is casual, well-spoken and confident. Yet whoever happens to be close enough might notice just how much his hands are quivering as he talks.
“Now, obviously, a lot of things have changed since then. The United States isn’t exactly a ragtag group of colonies anymore, but itself one of the most powerful military forces on the planet. The US Government has the funding, the manpower, and the arsenal to bring a country to its knees -- or take it off the map completely.”
He pauses to take another breath. Any one of the group can list off the country’s military accomplishments -- even the ones in the history books, provided they took the time to read them. But Max is the only real, true United States citizen among the diplomats sent to Mexico. Anyone could rattle off facts, but Max has the experience of being American, and the emotional ties that come with it.
“I come from a world a lot like this one,” Max says carefully. “The tension between the Soviet Union and the United States had been going on for decades before I was even born. Everyone thought it would end in an inevitable nuclear war. But in 1991, two years before I was ported out, it simply… stretched itself too thin. In the midst of political scandal, mismanagement, and dissent from its own people, it just collapsed. In my world, the Soviet Union is gone.”
He pauses to let that sink in before he continues, glancing around to gauge the reactions of the assembly.
“Obviously, that’s not the case here. But the United States here feels so much like the United States of my homeworld, the same country that kept standing even as its greatest rival collapsed. I can’t speak for the current state of the Soviet Union, but I have every reason to believe this United States is as strong as my own. I mean, if it’s not stronger.
‘To answer your question, I absolutely believe the government has the power to protect me, as an ImPort, and the others who share that title. Not just keep me safe from physical harm, but protect my future, too. I mean… I could grow up here. There. If I never got ported out, I could live out the rest of my days and have a pretty fulfilling life. That kind of protection doesn’t come from the power of a military.
‘The true strength of the United States lies in being diverse and adaptable. Over the past couple centuries, people from all over the world crossed the borders, bringing entire cultures with them. Intermingling of knowledge and philosophy on such a massive scale has opened up so many new opportunities and innovations, allowing for solving problems and overcoming adversities as they come.
‘We ImPorts are a part of that, too. Just because our borders are inter-dimensional instead of geographical doesn’t make the situation of the ImPorts any different. We’re part of what makes this country strong -- not just in the obvious ways with the superpowers and all of that, but in the knowledge, philosophy, technology, and other unique qualities we bring from our own worlds to enrich this one.”
He’s been rambling for a while now, and his palms are sweating, but he keeps a hopeful, friendly smile on his face. “The government has both the reasons and the means to protect us. I believe that they can, and they will.”

Eventually, they seem to come to conclusion regarding the next question they need to ask, and a man takes the microphone.
"We understand that your people are in a situation that is politically fraught; the spotlight has been on you, for both good deeds and bad... though we must admit that the bad deeds certainly have been more prevalent in the press.
So tell of us of your people, and the benefits that you, as a community, bring to America and its allies?"
[QUESTION NEEDED]
But all that is for later. For now, he has some boosting to do. The Count steps forward once again, chin raised and shoulders back to speak proudly. He might be doing so on behalf of a community he has been part of for less than a month, but anyone hearing Dooku’s words would be forgiven for thinking he had been advocating for imPorts for his entire life.
“With pleasure, my honoured hosts. My only concern is that to answer your question in full would occupy too much of your valuable time, for the list of benefits imPorts have brought to this world is long indeed. I will thus restrict myself to some key points.”
(Disclaimer: Dooku ‘restricting’ himself still means a good-sized speech. He is a politician, after all.)
“I would be remiss if I did not begin with the great works of our imPort forebearers: the first generation of heroes who led the reform movement which triumphed over corruption twenty-six years ago. It is thanks to these imPort heroes- and of the native allies who stood with them in their great struggle- that the United States stands as a democracy today, instead of a brutal and militarized police state.”
Again, the brush of implication, touching without stating aloud: what would Mexico’s security be like if its enormous northern neighbour was still under military rule? And it is no accident either, that emphasis on the word allies. Dooku pauses for a moment to let that sink in, then plunges forward, his voice strong with energy to match the activity and achievement of the imPort community.
“But that was the past. Let us discuss the present. Our generation of imPorts has only been in this universe for two years- but what years they have been! While the media focuses its gaze on the crimes committed by a tiny minority among us, imPort healers cure terminal illnesses. While the fearful ask how we can be controlled, imPort inventors make new leaps forward in technology. And while our enemies conspire to destroy us out of ignorance and envy, imPort philanthropy brings new hope and change to those most in need of it.”
The Count stretches out a long arm to gesture in front of him, palm turned upward as though he was presenting the combined benefits of imPorts for examination by the assembled audience.
“The results are dramatic. imPorts are fountains of prosperity, knowledge, and justice in society, both for the United States and the world. Quantum computing from Tesladyne, next-generation electronics from StarkTech, new environmental innovations from Starrware, medical research from the Future Foundation, robotics from Malachor Industries. The defeat of organized criminals and domestic terrorists such as the Hornets, the rescue of innocents from disasters and fires. And charity, my friends, vast quantities of time and money devoted to worthy causes by imPorts who use their celebrity and their powers to aid the less fortunate. Blood drives and food drives, educational programs and animal shelters, the promotion of public transit and literacy alike.”
Dooku pauses to take a breath after rattling off his list. Without the Dark Side to infuse his aged body, he has to pace himself in speaking a little more than he usually would. But his voice remains strong as he drives on to the end.
“All this and more is what imPorts contribute to the United States and our friends. All this and more shall be among the gratitude the people of Mexico shall receive from us, in trade and assistance- if you support us in this crucial time, and help us make our community whole again."
FINAL QUESTION
But in this context, at this given time, they look as content as they ever look with Dooku's answer. A bespectacled young man takes the microphone next, and while his frame is slight, his voice is loud and sure.
"You speak of the benefits that imPorts have brought to their host country, and I do not doubt the veracity of your words. But, of course, we must address the other side of the coin. The destruction that imPorts have brought to America is unprecedented for a population of your size. Not only that, but the amount of pointless death is unprecedented as well; such terrorism is typically committed with an ideology in mind, but in many of these cases, no such motive was revealed to us.
How is it that you propose to keep these members of your community in line, particularly when they are in possession of powers both great and terrible? Are you prepared to keep them in line, even when you count these individuals among your comrades and friends?"

But when the third question is raised, the silent figure finally makes a move for the mic, a hand raised to his colleagues to let them know they can leave it to him.
It's only a few paces between him and the stand, but each step is made deliberately and aglow with a confident swagger. Between that and the dazzlingly white, heavy lidded smile highlighting his statuesque features, the figure before the assembly is a study in absolute confidence and charm. It may seem a bit unrefined but there is no aura of arrogance or in any way a disposition of spite. It's just the look of a man who has seen the absolute worst possible outcomes for his actions. And staring down a row of critical politicians and risking their disapproval fell far short.
Between his crimson eyes, wild mane of cobalt hair, and a strange almost ethereal quality to his features, Cu might be the most 'otherwordly' of the three
--but as he leans forward to the mic he speaks in what some might find startlingly perfect Spanish. (OOC:Written in English because I'm an uncultured loser.)
"I'm going to level with you: Imports are dangerous." Cu shrugs, but there's no shame in tone. "There's no sugar coating it. Yeah, even the assertion that Imports are weapons COULD be true --if Imports were given the choice in the matter. Where I come from, to make the choice to give yourself to something bigger, to act as a nation’s blade in the defense of what you hold dear is one of the highest honors one could aspire to.
But that's the distinction, isn't it? Choice. Every day a person is both privileged and responsible to choose what course their life should take. We may not always get to choose the circumstances, but we can make of it what we will."
Cu Chulainn pauses long enough to give a derisive laugh, seemingly at himself and his own flowery words.
"Sorry, we're probably smothering you with that argument at this point. But if I had a point worth hearing, it's that whether the nations of this world acknowledge it or now, Imports know they have that same choice. I've seen men and women who could bench-press a pick-up or alter the properties of time and space. And that's probably terrifying to people who can't imagine having that kind of power.
I mean, it's no wonder the US and the Soviets are having this tug of war over who gets to claim we're their allies or property or whatever." He gives a half-hearted 'C'est la vie' raise of his palms into the air and a click of his tongue.
"But just as every import has the choice of abusing that power for their own sick gains... well... That anxiety you may have, whether a not an import could potentially harm you at any time? Well if there’s ever an import who does harm an innocent you can rest assured that feeling is an inexorable reality for them. They know as soon as they set a toe over that line they’ll be dealt with."
As he speaks Cu leans in, his voice fades to a whisper. But be it the proximity to the mic or the own force behind his words, everything he says comes in loud and clear.
"If not by my hand, countless others who swear to uphold justice and protect the powerless will see those psychopaths stopped. And I can guarantee that these ...I guess what you call 'Terrorists' are no friend of the Import community.
Reprisal for their actions has always been swift, and everything we can do, we have. Ifyou don’t believe me, I could start listing every criminal and degenerate we've put under our heel but we'd be here for an hour. I'm sure we could fish you up file, if my well spoken companion doesn't have one on hand." He tosses Dooku a wink, knowing full well the man had a list of cards with key talking points on him.
"But I'm sure you've heard of Pan: probably still thinks girls have cooties but created his own jungle hell on earth recently. And before that the chemical gas attack by that psychopath with a mask fetish, Crane." He's counting on his fingers now. "Lunatic, guy put anyone who didn't have a completely spotless ledger to the torch as if he was some kind of angel of retribution. Heh, speaking of divine failures, there was even some guy claiming to be the devil incarnate who summoned a legion of monsters. That was a fun weekend..."
Cu practically hums that, scratching a finger under his nose and smiling. Clearly a man who finds any and all of the above listed as little need for concern.
"But pretty terrifying stuff, right? I wouldn't blame you for feeling threatened by these freaks and sickos. But that's just it. Each time one of these guys steps out into the spotlight, they're struck down. Hard. And I can promise you anyone else that comes after them will meet the same fate."
