STRANGE, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN WE STARTED THIS GIG?

WHO: All diplomatic imPorts that have signed up HERE.
WHERE: The capitals of Mexico, South Korea, and France. UN-attending imPorts will be placed in Davos, Switzerland.
WHEN: January 26th.
WHAT: Democracy in motion as imPorts attempt to use their skills of persuasion to convince each government or organization to lend the imPorts - and America - their help. Players may also use this log to play out the long flight over, planning, and other associated activities.
WARNINGS: None anticipated; let us know if we should change this!

Depending on their assignment, all imPort diplomats will find themselves either in Seoul, South Korea; Mexico City, Mexico; Paris, France; or for UN attending imPorts, Davos in the Swiss Alps. They will be housed in the American Embassies and regardless of their Registration status, will be treated as American citizens. UN-attending imPorts will be housed in a hotel close by. Their accommodations will be that of an extremely luxurious hotel, and they will be provided with anything that they should require, be it books on the art of rhetoric, access to state of the art computers and laptops, food or drink. They will also be provided with boardrooms in which the teams may convene to assemble a strategy. Don't be distracted by the free drinks; this is a task that will require clear minds!

After one night of preparation, on January 26th, each team of imPorts will meet with either the government of their assigned nation or the UN. They will be placed at a podium in front of a room full of politicians and diplomats, and will be expected to state their argument. They will be allowed to have an opening speech before each assembly asks each group three questions.

When either the opening speech has been concluded OR the question has been answered to each player's satisfaction, please put QUESTION NEEDED in the subject title of your comment, and we will deliver the next question.

Just remember: an invasion is coming! Even if acquiring the alliance of these governments and organizations do not help with the imPorts' immediate predicament, it will impact the future of the game at large!

Get ready, our silver-tongued imPorts, and good luck!

THE BREAKDOWN -- This is a mingling thread for all diplomatic envoys, regardless of your specific team. You can tag in or tag into other open threads here. For the sake of chronological coherence, you can have (A) a conference set before takeoff to your respective capital for January 25th, (B) a SEAPE (Skype-esque) video feed intended for all other imPort diplomats to check into and talk on your brief coffee breaks (independent of the Network, and thus not as foolproof -- don't say anything that might cause an international crisis!) ON January 26th, or (C) for the evening of January 26th you can open a thread with the other imPorts sent to your diplomatic city for a little exploration of that city!

If you want to open a thread for Option (B), remember to pick out a SEAPE username for your character!

[Gregor is sitting off in a corner in the one Barrayaran suit he has, the one he'd arrived in. It's black, expensively hand-tailored, devoid of any military markings, and has stitched tiny silver leaves twining around the cuffs and collar. It also does not have lapels, but rather a high collar and concealed buttons down the front.

He has the full Imperial reserve on today, meaning he looks inscrutably neutral, maybe faintly sad if you look closely, and is bent over a pad of paper with a cheap ball point pen. Using paper instead of flimsies or an outright console was an adjustment, but he's smoothly moving along now, scanning his written arguments and adding notes here and there.

Occasionally he stops to put a hand on the comm device set next to him at the table he's working at, compulsively. It's about the only sign of humanity to him, presently, though anyone is welcome to come bother him and harass him into being social. He's not as gruff as he looks.

Though he does look like he stepped out of a slightly confused period painting. It's all in the way he holds himself.]

[ Honestly, Mitchell had really signed up for the thing as a courtesy. He'd actually forget about it, if it weren't for the constant reminders from his phone that it existed. So during coffee breaks, he'd have it open, just for open communication, even though he spent most of his breaks hunched over his blackberry or another book, his lips on a coffee cup while he tried to get more work done miraculously in the sparse bit of time between things he needed to do.

But anyone who would need him wouldn't have to look hard -- M100 was pretty easy to figure out, he thought.

[ Francis is also in the suit that he was brought in. He had been killed at an important ceremony and the blood from his wounds wasn't brought with him, so there was no reason not to wear it.

He immediately goes to anyone on the trip to Korea to touch base. ]

B

[ Francis' callsign was FUImPorts, simply because he's using his initials and is an ImPort Ambassador, of course. Using Skype was not too different to using computers so he didn't have any problems with it, though he didn't use it to talk to ImPorts, so that would be new. ]

C

[ There's not much room for actual fun, but an exploration of the city would be worth while anyway. Francis is certainly going, so he's glad of any company he gets. ]

[Her username is valiant because no one can ever really accuse her of being terribly witty when it comes to this sort of thing. She looks like a queen, at least, she looks like she knows what she's doing, even as she's going over papers and drinking tea and trying very desperately to not mess this up.

Susan has trained her very well to not let it show if she does mess things up, at least.

Also she's drinking tea.]

[This is an opportunity.

Living with the Musketeers means she knows about France, but living with the Musketeers means she also knows about France in the 1600s, not in the early 21st century, retroville be damned. So she's going on the most touristy trip she can, and hey, maybe she has dragged one of the poor people on this envoy with her.

Hey is that the Eiffel Tower?]

A.
[ Kitty is dressed very simply and very sweetly. In her poodle skirt and sweater and neck-kerchief and flats, she looks a lot like an earnest young thing, dressed in her best and most formal clothes which are not anywhere near fancy enough for the assembly she's going to address. All the clothes she's bringing are like this: sweet, naive, earnest, guileless. In someone a little older or less pretty, it would come across as a little bit rube-ish. But Kitty Jones is pretty, and sweet-voiced, and young, and intensely articulate, and she knows that the effect will be endearing rather than insulting or unimpressive. Her speech, likewise, is written to be endearing and enthusiastic.

Because she knows that there are people going who will provide cold hard facts, level-headed analyses. She's ready to be there as the sweet little sister. The charming naif, pushing for peace and providing an example of just how harmless imPorts can get. So her tailored pant-suits stay behind, her leather jacket and her gun, her hair gets curled, her make-up is applied with a light hand, and she works on her kindest smile.

It's not like she'll be saying anything she doesn't believe. There won't be any lying going on. It's not even like this image is a lie. It's a face she often presents to the public. And honestly...she is actually really excited to speak to the UN, and really enthusiastic to get to argue for peace, to argue for negotiations and support of a non-violent sort. She's just carefully managing herself to make sure that's clear. ]

B.
[ Slightly unfortunately, her SEAPE name was chosen before this and she hasn't had time to make a new one, so it's not so very professional. It's the same as her rumblr: therealkittyjones. ]

Benton Fraser - Team France

[personal profile] dogsled 2016-01-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
A. [ He'd mostly been patient, watching everyone murmur and mingle, and while it was true that he wasn't a wholly confrontational sort of person, he did know the meaning of a deadline. They would all be taking off soon, they wouldn't get much sleep, and it would be a good idea for all of them to address some of the topics at hand.

So he found his place at the conference table, and turned on the mic, tapping it gently with his fingertips to check that it was working.
]

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd just like, if I may, to establish our prospective talking points. It's obvious that we shouldn't dwell too long on things that our prospective countries already know, given our limited time, but we should see that we don't, as groups, overlook any of the topics that will most endear our host countries toward us. The human rights topic is of course paramount, naturally; the question of whether or not we are commodities or people in our own right--what else should we be addressing?

B. [ Fraser's sn is goodie2shoes, and he didn't choose it for himself. He is available to his fellow diplomats most of the hours of both days, on account of that old motto: I'll sleep when I'm dead. Between stake outs and running around harebrained, he's done worse than stay awake three days in a row, here and there, so two isn't so bad.

But he can also be found in the corner of the French diplomatic suite, an hour or two before they're to be seen on the floor, his his thumb and forefinger pressed hard to the bridge of his nose, mouthing rehearsed words soundlessly.

[ It's the evening before their big meeting, and Raina has no doubt that Mitch is awake. She must admit that she's glad for this arrangement. She's comfortable with both parties and not only that, they have the powerhouse former UN ambassador on their side. If ever there's a time for him to show off his strengths in hopes to be put into the position again, it's now.

But before they carry on, she needs to tell him a few things. She has to come clean. And so, Raina lingers outside of his hotel room door -- knocking lightly. ]

While he disdains this world's strange lack of robes and capes in its fashions, he acknowledges that he must adapt to his new environment. To win over these natives to the cause of imPorts, he must style himself to appear sympathetically: as one of them. He is not remotely intimidated by the prospect of negotiating regarding this planet's wars after having been on Earth less than a month, and carries himself with aloof confidence as he greets other imPorts before they depart for their flights. The upside of his recent arrival: he will be travelling with very little luggage.]

[ option a ; intergroup conference ]

[Saint Walker has always been a verbose man, and a verbose man of strong convictions. Such a person is well used to giving speeches and in appealing to people's better natures. What he is not familiar with, however, is politics -- and, more to the point, human politics. He is dressed as humbly as he always is in the garb of his own people, something more suited to hiking than to giving long speeches. He sits at a table, poring over one book with several more stacked up beside him, all about the state of world politics.

It is an astoundingly large amount to soak up at one given time, and even he has to push his book away momentarily, raising one hand to rub at his forehead.]

There is more still to learn that I cannot learn from books alone, [he openly confesses, then gazes around him. Surely one of his comrades here may lend him a hand.]

[ option c ; in the hotel's conference room ]

[Saint Walker would be lying if he said he weren't curious about the city outside of their hotel rooms, but they have more important business to attend to. He's holed himself in the conference room with yet more books, though he's accepted the generous offer they've been given for food and drink; in front of him a pot of tea he had requested, and a small jug of lentil stew.

He flips through the pages of his research ponderously, then looks up.]

Perhaps the time for research is done. We should collaborate and ensure that our speeches may work in unison.

[ Kanaya arrives to the meeting in a dress that's a bit fancier than her day-to-day, with Ashiah in something to match, chirping occasionally from her little green basket. Kanaya of course can't help but take note of how everyone's dressed. The actual details of the talks aren't exactly her specialty, but she can certainly stick with what she knows. ]

I do think that, while it may seem to be a secondary concern, we do need to take a special interest in how we are presenting ourselves, not only in our rhetoric, but also in our appearance. Obviously not in ways that necessarily erase any of the many and varied cultures represented here, but...professional.

Something that conveys that we take this audience seriously, and communicates respect to our hosts. [ Her eyes pass over the rest of the conference, some very pointedly. No one ever accused Kanaya of not being passive-aggressive. ]

c. my seoul to take

[ A new place in a new country, Kanaya can't help but think she should take the opportunity to get to know the place. It reminds her of the talk she had with Manolo a few months ago, and how little she's seen of the world. But still, she can't quite keep her mind on the Seoul ahead of her. Those bastards still have her brother and his boyfriend. It seems wrong for her to enjoy herself while they're held in captivity.

So, while she may tag along for an exploration of the local nightlife, she'll be as dour as ever. You've been saddled with a fuddy-duddy, I'm afraid.

[QUESTION NEEDED] JANUARY 26 | TEAM UN | MITCH + RAINA + JEFF

[personal profile] viced 2016-01-27 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ After yesterday's evening of speechcraft, planning, and discussion -- the team decided that Mitch would handle the opening statement, and flanked by his two partners, Hundred looks relaxed at the podium. Dark suit, neutral tie, everything about him screams politician -- but the relaxed air almost feels comfortable. Like going home. He doesn't clear his throat, or drink water, he just goes right for it, when they're given the go-ahead to start. ]

Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman. First off, I want to thank each and every one of you for giving us this opportunity to speak with you -- as well as the other groups of imports that you’ll hear from today. We’re, as a whole, a diverse community, as I’m sure you’ve already gathered. Us three alone are a great picture of not just the diversity of our community, but what we’ve been able to offer to the world at large as well. For those of you that don’t know me, I’m Mitchell Hundred -- ambassador to the City of DeChima and part time Civil-Engineer and Architect -- but in my past I’ve also served as the Mayor of both our previous home, the City, the Mayor of New York City in my own world, and I was later the US Ambassador to the UN. My friend Jeff Winger, here, is the host of Winger Man: Lawyer at Large, as well as a Lawyer with his own practice -- a job he’s held in his own world as well. Our other friend is Raina, a brilliant scientist who works in imPort Cellular research, and worked in science and recruiting peoples with superpowers in her world as well.

I wish I could list more of us, bring more here. In our population, we have CEOs, scientists, politicians, students, children -- there’s imports of every race, gender, and creed. We have imports who were raised in worlds where the laws and rules are different, and some pretty close to this one. We can only each offer our own perspectives, and to that end, I can really only talk about my own -- but I will. What I’m asking from you today is for support. I've been where you're sitting now, and I know it’s difficult, to make a choice like that, given the perspective of who we are -- what some of us are -- and I understand that. But we also need to look at what the United Nations is -- and yes, we understand that stepping into the middle of every conflict isn’t how you operate, and I agree that the UN perhaps shouldn’t.

But that doesn’t mean that there are not situations where you can offer guidance and leadership, and maybe even support. We have the United States at our backs, but the rest of the world hasn’t seen us -- that’s why we’re here in front of most of you today. We’re here, because we want to work with you -- the majority of us desperately want to give what we can to the world. We have businesses, scientists, imports everywhere who are trying to make things better, bringing their talents to the world, to make everyone have a better place here. We’re not asking for much in return -- but a human rights violation like this should be addressed. It needs to be addressed. What if someone else tries this in the future with the citizens of another country? Ten, fifteen years down the line, who’s to say that we haven’t spread out -- had families, by then? What if this happens again? What if this moment is the justification that says that the UN won’t do anything? Because people have been kidnapped en-masse, and nothing was done? A war started an escalated, or even if nothing happens from this now, something will later. Every action in the global sphere has a consequence eventually. We’re not asking for troops, we’re asking for support. We don’t need you to start a war for us. We want you to help us, like you did in my world -- in Cyprus, or during the Indo-Pakistani War. Neither of these started a war, but they ended one. Maybe not the larger war itself, but if we can prevent another war from starting, isn’t that important?

Right now the United States is likely looking all over for the missing imports -- people were taken from their beds by a force we can’t find or understand yet. We’re looking for our missing people, but we can’t do it without help, or even just support. We want to help this world, hell, I want to offer everything that I can to make this world a better place. But can’t we be offered safety and security in its stead? Inaction is just as bad as acting too far, I don’t want us to become a failure on the UN’s ledger, but instead a success. We need your help to do this. We ask that you don’t turn a blind eye to acts of aggression -- Article 39 of the UN charter says that the Security council will determine if there’s a threat to the peace -- and how to deal with it. If kidnapping people from their homes, over fifty of them, isn’t a threat to peace, then I’m not sure what is. I’ve seen my own share of human rights violations -- I saw terrorist attacks on American soil -- and stopped one in my own world -- but we aren’t capable of handling this alone. We want to follow the laws and the rules that this world holds for us, but how can we do that when we’re hunted like possessions to be taken, kidnapped and captured without any word to our friends or families? Some of us have families here, others of us are leaders, like myself and the other ambassadors. Will it stop with just this round of kidnapees? What’s happening to our fellow imports? I worry about import threats as much as any native here -- but we don’t know if the people who’ve been taken will come back the same. What if they aren’t? We can only ask what ifs until our friends and companions are returned to us. We can’t predict what’s happening because we don’t know, other than the fact that they do not want to be there. They’ve been allowed to communicate that they aren’t happy where they’re at, and that should say enough, that they should be returned safely. If they aren’t… who’s to say that the next batch of people kidnapped could be from somewhere else -- another population? We may be the first targeted, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be the last, but we could be, with your intervention.

[ He paused, then, a shift, while he considered, before he spoke. ]

We know an import who recently predicted trouble for us -- that our powers would be taken, and they approached me regarding what’s happened to our imports. They told me that we could see people die -- imports would be killed. And no matter whether you die and do or don’t come back -- experiencing that before your time is harrowing, and asking people to go through that, after being held captive? I can’t imagine making that choice right now. [ He leaned forward, slightly, hands open, a slight gesture of plea. ] That’s why we’re asking for your help. Please don’t make us do this alone.

At the end of the day, we want to change the world for the better -- and we know you want to do so too -- and we can do that together, if we stand as a united front, we can be stronger together, and I think that’s what we and you could do together, if you support us now in our time of need. But I know all of you have concerns, and we'd be happy to address them with you all.

[ And then, it was time to wait. ]

[As Mitch speaks, he is faced down by several incisive gazes, sharp and considering, and the room falls into low murmurs as the assembly decides upon what question they should be giving these verbose imPorts. Once they have decided, the room quiets, and one man leans over to speak into his microphone, expression unreadable.]

You speak of ceasing a terrorist attack on your home soil, but it appears to some members of our assembly that several terrorist attacks have occurred on the very soil that houses you. There was one of such attack at the beginning of this very month.

Inaction is inherently political, and we concede to that. What we cannot concede to is the fact that stepping in on behalf of a violent population that has chased after their own desires will not send a message of allegiance to imPorts to the rest of the world -- this world being the one that we serve.

How can you respond to these reservations in the face of a growing, violent community?

TEAM U.N. DEUX: Kitty Jones, Saint Walker, and Papyrus the Adorable Skeleton

[personal profile] rathercommon 2016-01-27 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ Kitty Jones takes the podium first, with her strange-looking companions behind her. She’s a little underdressed for the occasion, but in a charming sort of way: with her curled hair, long skirt, and neck-kerchief, she’s clearly tried hard, but presumably simply doesn’t have the wardrobe to dress up fancy enough. She looks like any ambitious, bright young lady - and with those clothes, she looks someone from this world.

Her smile is nervous. Just a bit. That nervousness is very much not faked. They're so intimidating... ]
Honored delegates, good evening. Bonjour. Guten tag, dobriy den. [ It must be noted that her pronunciation of the French, the German, and the Russian are all absolutely atrocious, but deeply heartfelt. It’ll depend on the attitude of the individual delegate whether this comes across condescending or deeply earnest. ]

We come before you tonight to beg your assistance rescuing our comrades. The United Nations is an august body with an admirable mission of keeping peace in the world - [ And she looks up suddenly, and speaks with less formality, off the cuff. ] And I really just admire that so much. There really isn’t any greater mission than putting an end to this...horrid cycle of warfare and brutality. And it’s really an honour to get to speak here to all of you. Really, thank you so much for hearing me.

[ And back to the prepared remarks. ]

Peace, unfortunately, is a dreadfully elusive thing in this time. America and Russia are both proud nations, unable to step back from their desire to seem strong in order to pursue the agenda they should be pursuing - the agenda that you all prize - peace. They drive closer and closer to war that we, the imPort community, want no part of. They’re unable to see, and need outside eyes, outside voices, to point out that this is madness.

And we imPorts - we really don’t want to fight. Many of us have been been brought here from worlds torn by war. I know I have, from a country ground down by constant violence...We’ve tried to take advantage of our escape from those horrid circumstances to build lives here. Lives of bustling industry, contributing to the economy of our cities and of the world. Lives supporting those less fortunate than us - you can look to the packets you’ve been given - [ Because, indeed, packets were distributed earlier - ] To see listings of imPort businesses and charities that have benefitted not just local people in America, but people across the world. We’re given the priceless opportunity to build lives in this world that are sometimes brief, but so precious for their normalcy. For the way that they give us the opportunity - some of us, our first opportunity ever - to live in peace.

I know it’s hard to take a look at us and see normalcy. I mean, we even look strange. You know. Some of us have outlandish hair, and I’ve got tattoos - [ She lifts her wrist to show these tattoos to the delegates (though the smile on her face is very sweet, rather blunting the horrific effect of that bit of counter-culture) just to set the stage for more look how normal we weird sorts are. ] And some of us look even stranger still. [ And here she spreads her hands to indicate Saint Walker and Papyrus. ]

But as strange as we might look, our minds and spirits are no different from yours. Even the oddest of us have human hopes and desires. For a good stable life. Sometimes for families. For understanding, and for peace.

[ And with that, she nods towards Saint Walker, ceding the floor to him. ]

[Saint Walker steps up to the podium, and while Kitty was able to speak with some semblance of disarming casualness, he looks perfectly poised and proper -- not because it is a studied motion, but because that is how he naturally carries himself, feet squared, hands tucked neatly behind his back, and large, expressive eyes staring straight at their audience. He inclines his head towards the crowd listening to him and regards them with a small smile before simply launching straight into things.]

Thank you. To both Kitty Jones, for clarifying our points so incisively, and to you all, for agreeing to listen to us. Many see listening as one of the simplest things one can do, but I assure you, even gathering forces to come and at least consider the other’s perspective is a frightfully rare thing, and truly, it warms my heart to see that here, there is an assembly of those that would do the honour of considering what it is we have to say.

I am Saint Walker. I cannot greet you in several languages, for I came here without the knowledge of even one Earth language, but I believe that we all speak the same language here: the language of peace. You have your reservations on what intervention will accomplish, and that is something that I deeply sympathize with. To intervene is to take responsibility, and to take responsibility for something that mankind fears, and rightfully so. It is always tempting to say that once events simply pass on their own. At one time, perhaps I even believed such a thing myself.

But I regret to express the fact that as long as violence is being perpetrated, the cycle of violence continues. Even those that we cannot understand have reasons for their actions, and until someone intervenes and allows their voices to be heard, that cycle will continue. It will always continue. I understand your fears. I too was once a father, a husband, a son, eager to protect my own. But my planet was destroyed, not by mere perpetrators of violence, but by victims. They experienced violence and were, in turn, hungry for vengeance and lashed out as a result.

There is very little in life that is black and white, however much we may wish it to be so. We do not come to you asking you to assist in war, but to assist our seized comrades. ImPorts we may be, but many of us, like myself, are from places where we no longer have any community. For many of us, this community is the first place where we have found like minds for a very, very long time. Since my arrival, I have been met with unwavering kindness and consideration, more than I would have any right to expect from strangers. And now, so many of these people are in danger not because of what they have done, but what they are. The prisoners may encompass some who had worked for the American government, but so many others simply wish to live their lives. Children are among their ranks, brothers and sisters, children who deserve nothing more than to be raised in the peace that was robbed from my own children.

That is why we stand before you today, my friends. We desire peace with which to live our lives, and we are no less worthy of such a thing than anyone else who might stand before you. As Kitty Jones pointed out, we do have our differences, [he says with a wry little smile, glancing down for the first time to gesture towards his unusual visage,] but I believe that we all stand for the same things.

We ask for peace. In my blackest night, I was lucky enough to be raised from it, to be granted with a second chance, and all of our kidnapped friends deserve the same -- for you to be the one to grant them this chance. There is always hope, and you can help us provide that hope.

[Then, with an intonation of someone who states it as a creed rather than a statement, he says:]

All will be well. And with your help, we hope to make it so.

[ Kanaya had made a mistake. She is well out of her depth in diplomacy, and she isn't even sure her ulterior motives are even still applicable anymore. But then, that was more of a contingency, maybe it's a good thing if she turns out not to be needed. If all she's come to Korean to do is participate in these talks, that means the search is going better than expected, now that the government has lent their support.

Still, it also means she's not in a position to help, and that's more than a little frustrating. At least she still has her daughter with her, though carrying an alien larva has raised more than a few eyebrows, and Ashiah seems confused to see her mother looking suddenly human.

She tried to learn as much conversational Korean as she could on the plane. Even if they'll have translators, she thought it might be a show of good faith. Unfortunately, she never got much further than anyoung hashimnikka, so the most she can offer is a greeting. But, given that she doesn't have much to say, it may be better if she doesn't say anything that she can't say in their native tongue for now.

S.KOREA: Jinseok, Kid, Francis [QUESTION NEEDED]

[personal profile] dicktate 2016-01-28 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ There's no excuse for dressing sloppy on any given day, so of course today wasn't going to be an exception for Jinseok. He's pulled on his best suit, slicked back his hair, and made sure his glasses are on straight--he doesn't wear them and there's no lenses in the frames, but this seems like a situation where you need to be distinguished. Also, he thinks he looks great in them, but what else is new? He looks great in everything.

He doesn't start his speech right away, standing with his hands folded at his waist, looking like he's taking time to acknowledge everyone, but really only making sure everyone has enough time to acknowledge him.

When he finally begins his speech, it's with a devastating smile, and delivered entirely in fluent, native Korean:
]

Good evening, beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen. My name? Jinseok Jin, imPort spokesperson, and you maybe already know why I am here.

I was born in Korea, raised in Korea, and you can trust a person like me who says he knows Korea. Of all the countries in the world, we have always been front runners when it comes to medicine, cosmetics, and advancements in technology. But more than those things, even though they are important and make our country great, we stand rightfully proud of our nation and our heritage.

The American government sent myself and my fellow imPorts here, but not because we want you to help us without reward or without bringing Korea more strength. Instead, we want you to help us in our time of need as imPorts, so that we can in turn help you in your times of need ahead, whether that be of financial concerns or security.

To turn our backs on the United States now will be a black mark on our records that we will not be able to rid ourselves of. No matter how much our country grows and prospers, we will always be the allies who stepped away when the phone rang. To turn our backs on the US now will turn us into a country that nobody will consider an ally, and we have already seen what happens to a Korea that keeps itself hidden away.

The Russians believe that we, as imPorts, are nothing more than weapons to be used against whomever they decide are their enemies, that we are not people. You can only imagine how they intend to treat us, if they see us as nothing more than things to be controlled or destroyed on a whim, and how much of a threat that flagrancy poses to a people who must live so close to them. It takes a dangerous kind of mindset to so easily do away with the humanity of people who are so diverse in age and culture, from children to grandfathers, from Korean to lives from other peoples not even on Earth. We know that possible retaliation from the USSR is a concern, but all that needs to be asked is this: does South Korea not want to strengthen its bonds in the face of a war?

Today, my fellow imPorts and I hope that together, as good people, we can work together for everyone’s benefit, and step forward as allies into a long future of peace and goodwill. We, on behalf of the United States, have come before you today in entreaty, that you will find it in yourselves to aid us. Not only for financial or political gain, but because Korea's strong and proud people do not wish to let others dictate where their compassions lay.

Thank you, our kind and brilliant hosts, for allowing us the opportunity to speak to you today.

[personal profile] mmnpcs 2016-01-28 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Even before Jinseok had started his speech, it was clear that their host's eyes were firmly on him, recognizing him not only as an imPort, but one of their own. Beginning the speech with their Korean representative was a good move, it seems; even now, the people in the room are nodding appraisingly, glad to see one of their own.

That doesn't mean that they don't have their work cut out for them, of course; it just means that they have begun their speech in a sympathetic light.]

First of all, we would like to welcome you here, imPorts. We hope that you have found both your trip and your accommodations to be comfortable. [For a moment, their hosts' expressions are warm and welcoming, but once the pleasantries are over, they quickly smooth out into the same serious, impassive expressions one would expect from an emergency council.]

While we understand the trials that you are facing, you must also understand the position that you have put your host country in. You have been an economic and political strain on a country that has long since been at war, and such strains have been... alarming, internationally speaking.

More to the point, it seems that you have been a greater drain on America than you have been a boon. Your people have been unpredictable; dangerous. They have killed American citizens, and have cost your home country an inexcusable amount in property damage.

What benefits have you brought to America to justify this cost?

France:- Charles Xavier, Benton Fraser and Miles Edgeworth

[personal profile] dogsled 2016-01-29 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ When the second French team are called up to speak, it’s Fraser who raises his head first, tapping his mic to ensure that it’s working before he goes to address the group. He’s dressed in his no doubt familiar red finery, the uniform of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His buttons and boots are polished to a shine, his presentation pristine, much as it appears in much of the recent publicity for the RCMP--and for Canada as well. The French delegates may even recognise him from several internet videos debunking Canadian myths, such as “The Mountie Explains It All: All Canadians Drive Snowmobiles or Dog Sleds”; recorded, suspiciously, from the back of an actual dog sled.

The diplomatic party have been visible and genuine since their arrival in the country. They’ve had their photos snapped by French magazines, all eager to interview them about their mission once their diplomatic mission is over, and recorded on the French news arriving at the airport, Fraser and Edgeworth speaking in French to fans that have been waiting for hours, and handing out hastily made badges that read “Imports are People”. Imports are people, not weapons! "

Fraser removes his hat before he begins to speak. It’s a sign of the gravity of the occasion.
]

Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Benton Fraser. Before I was brought here, my life wasn’t complicated, my world wasn’t complicated; I was a Constable in the Canadian Royal Mounted Police. I loved and served the country where I was born, where I grew up, as my father and grandfather did. Canada is often called the child of France; it is where my family are buried; my parents, and their parents, and it’s where I leave my half-sister, with whom I have been reunited only a year.

I’ve been very fortunate. I’m not alone, my partner joined me not long after I arrived here. My partner, my only link to home, my companion and friend--who has been abducted by Russia. Unlike you, esteemed friends, I will not be returning to my family tonight. I will not even be able to return home, to the country and people that I love.

I say this because I want to illuminate our point early: We come to you as people, just like you, with our powers nullified. We are citizens, displaced from our own world, who cannot even leave the country to which we have been naturalised. We have found ourselves, not unlike France itself, trapped between the Devil and the deep blue sea, dropped into the middle of a frigid war which is not our own to fight, and yet which concerns us greatly. None of us want war, less so would we ever wish to be its trigger, and yet by our very existence that has become the case.

We came here with the plan to discuss France’s economy, and its long term friendship with the United States, to bargain with you that our continued value in Allied hands is greater than it would be if ownership of our kind is in dispute. ImPort advances made in America benefit France. The technology, military and medical fields have all benefited from imPort influences. I was going to speak about how pressing us into Soviet service would tilt the axis of power in Russia’s favor, and put not only your allies, but your agreements with the rest of Europe - and perhaps even France itself - at risk. But my fellows would like to speak, and I don’t want to drag this out excessively. Instead, I would like to speak to you about optimism--or L’Optimisme, in fact.

“All is for the best, in the best of all possible worlds”. Candide grew up in a paradise, separated from hunger and pain, from war, from fear and death, and reassured by his ideal, that this world - his world - must be the best of all possible worlds, because it was as God had made it. He goes out into the world, where he witnesses great atrocities and disaster, and cannot justify it, as Voltaire could not. His view, when all is said and done, is that a man “must cultivate his garden”. In English the idiom goes thus: “You reap what you sow.”

I must ask our friends here, which stance they would have France enter into, as Russia declares war unjustly on its ally, and takes innocent people - even children - prisoner under its banner. Will France cover its eyes and adopt Pangloss’ attitude that it is as God willed it, no matter how terrible, how devastating, and say that “All is for the best” at this act of violence against us? Or will France take the stance that it must cultivate its garden, for if Russia can act with such cruelty toward strangers, there is nothing to prevent them to doing the same to other American allies--to your partners, and your children.

[ And with that, Fraser glances toward Edgeworth, and moves to sit back down. ]

[And Miles Edgeworth steps up to the podium. Unlike Fraser, he does not come out in full "costume". His suit is simple, well cut, and professional, albeit in the cranberry shade associated with him. Edgeworth stands up straight and looks outward, projecting his voice to the crowd. He speaks in French as well, and while his accent has a rough edge to it, it's not enough to impair understanding.]

I'm Miles Edgeworth, an imPort and attorney from the United States of America. However, the America I came from, the America that I grew up with, is quite different than the one you know. By the time I was born, there was no USSR to rattle sabers against. The Cold War was an artifact of the past, a distant specter of an apocalypse we had narrowly avoided. Peace had been achieved, allowing us a greater friendship with the international community - a relationship I took full advantage of in my youth. Germany, Britain, Japan, and yes, France as well, were all nations I had visited and grown to love during my travels. And I am not the only one!

[He raises his voice, his eyes glittering with enthusiasm as he speaks]

Ever since my arrival in Cape Canaveral, I have met and befriended imPorts, all with their own unique homelands. Men and women from different Americas. Men and women from different nations. Men and women from different worlds, even! ImPorts are not just Americans. Our numbers include your countrymen, as well.

[And at that point, Edgeworth slams his hand on the podium, his enthusiasm growing stern and harsh]

And these same countrymen are the ones who will be abandoned if we do not take a unified stand against Russian aggression! These countrymen, these citizens of the world, these citizens of the universe will have their rights and their very humanity stripped away from them! You've heard what they had to say themselves - we are not soldiers to be detained. We are weapons to be confiscated. "Weapons" that will be used against their will, and "weapons" to be disposed of if they do not work the way they should. If the USSR is willing to silence its citizens at all costs, people they consider human, what hope do imPorts have? What sort of dignity or compassion can we expect from those that would enslave us?

Will you, the proud people of France, stand for this? Will the birthplace of Enlightenment, the inspiration for American liberty, stand idle while your brothers and sisters are spirited away by those that would deny them the freedoms that you have pioneered? And will France cower in the face of Russian aggression, when they have always stood strong and proud against them?

[And Edgeworth breathes in deep, relaxing]

I think not. Let me repeat: I have seen a world where the Cold War has ended. I have seen a world of peace. However, this peace would not have been possible without our brothers and sisters in the international community. And peace will not be possible without you.

TEAM SASSY FRANCE (Lucy, Eric, and Chilton)

[personal profile] slightlyoffchilt 2016-01-29 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
He had requested a brief conference before they would hold audience, before they touched foot upon that podium and spoke to a room full of skeptical politerati. It was scheduled precisely -- he didn't want to keep the diplomats waiting, especially given how wary France was in its relations to the imPort populace. Chilton figured they would need no more than half an hour to stimulate morale and reinforce strategy.

The boardroom provided for this meeting was subdued enough, quiet in its content. Suitable, thought the psychiatrist, in the most neutral of terms. It was that neutrality that needed to be persuaded away.

"I think," he began, his tone a swagger. "Is that we ought to conflate the US Government with the imPort populace. France has an amicable relation with the US, after all, and they see us -- as a group -- as a separate state. We need to persuade them otherwise."
illuminescent: (Lucy - consider and think)

[personal profile] illuminescent 2016-01-29 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucy has been told, many times, that whoever arrives later has the greater power in negotiations, and even if you don't hold them it's best to pretend you do. So she was content enough to agree, and she took her time to consider what Chilton was saying. At the very least, she was good at governing, in her own way, so this was a natural fit.

She nodded as he spoke. "You mean, doctor, to imply that our decisions and those of the sovereign state that houses us are one in the same, or that we simply agree with the decisions they make? For if it is the latter, it would unburden us of the blame of any poor decisions made, but I do not know if such comments might be thought as accurate."

I miss the air, the people, the language… I miss my home. But I also will freely admit that in the time I’ve been here, I’ve been spoiled.

“Never back home would I have gotten the chance to watch moving pictures with just the touch of a button, and in the comfort of my own home. Never would I have had the privilege of sampling the delicious foods from nations all across the world, many restaurants just a quick bus ride away. And never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would ever cross the border into another country by flying through the sky on an airplane. It’s been an amazing experience, being here.”

He pauses a moment and his smile slowly disappears under his mustache. He takes a breath and continues, “But perhaps the greatest things I’ve gained from my experience in this time, this place… are the impossible connections I’ve made- we’ve made -with the other imPorts we’ve met. In time, I’m sure my time would have caught up to some of the advancements we’ve seen in this era, but you can’t replace people. You can’t replace friendships.

“Right now there are over fifty imPorts held captive by the Soviets. Several of them are my friends. At least two are even roommates of mine and Manolo, people we have grown used to seeing every day since we arrived, and our household is all the dimmer without their presence.”

Jaime, Roxas, Newton… Joaquin takes another breath and glances at each face that dares to meet his gaze. Now was when things got really personal. “If you remember your history, there were times when no one in Mexico was safe. We had just came out of the revolution and banditos were everywhere, stealing from villages, taking with them material possessions and destroying lives. As a soldier back then, I was often sent to other towns to help defend them in their time of need. We were stretched thin, but we went wherever we were called. Because people mattered! Lives mattered. You helped out your fellow man and in return they helped you. It was all a matter of course, but we survived that way and ultimately,” he gestures to the crowd themselves, “your country- our country -has continued to thrive that way.”

“We’re here to encourage you to help the United States in their cause. This is no simple request, we know. But as an imPort, I implore you to think of those missing souls that have been spirited away from their home away from home. We’re all from different walks of life, different countries, some even from different planets… but we’re all part of the same struggling family. It’s my hope that you will listen with compassion in your hearts and, by the end of our discussions, you will also find yourself lending aid to our cause. Thank you for your consideration.”

[QUESTION NEEDED] Team UN #1 - Gregor Vorbarra

[personal profile] vorbarra 2016-01-31 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Gregor is a tall, lean, dark form in a pristine black suit somewhere been futuristic and feudalistic, trimmed in delicate silver stitching of leaves. He carries himself solemnly, with the full weight of his focus on whoever he looks at, unwavering. Empathy sits behind his eyes.

He has no notes and comes off natural and unrehearsed. Every word is calculated for multiple goals-- even the short length of his speech is meant to serve a purpose. And so he begins by addressing what would surely be an elephant in the room.]

доброе утро.

[Good morning. He speaks quietly, inviting the listener to lean closer. Even as he switches to English, his words carry a Russian accent polished smooth.]

There is no one more than me who wishes to see us achieve a peaceful resolution with the Soviet Union. They are my ancestors. When I speak to you about imPort rights, understand that perspective. [A short pause to let that sink in, before continuing.] They have placed themselves in opposition to the humanitarian objectives the UN laudably espouses, and I am here to encourage you to stay true to the very goal of this organization.

They have kidnapped us and weaponized us. They refuse us medical treatment, privacy, or hygiene, all in defiance of the worldwide accepted standards on treatment of prisoners. I have a personal list of several captives who need urgent medical aid and have been denied it. We are refugees from our own sovereign nations; we should be treated in accordance with those rights already established by the UN for refugees.

Preventing imPorts from being treated as weapons protects not only us but all of you and all of your families, so that we may not be unwillingly used against you. It is my fervent hope that we may all learn to recognize the inherent humanity in each other, regardless of species, and unite in defense of it, not to attack but to preserve.

I have heard mention that there is no need for intervention because our population is in so much flux, we can't possibly know what we want with any consistency. [His gaze sharpens suddenly.] We know that we want agency. We want safety. We want to live our lives with the ability to determine for ourselves our own fate. We want the same things as anyone else on Earth. More concrete, specific political demands are irrelevant and immaterial until these initial moral aims have been met-- indeed, it is insulting to suppose that we would count them higher priority than achieving recognized personhood.

You say we have done a poor job governing ourselves. I concede that we are met with many unique challenges, some of which we have failed to rise above. To that end, we need your help to form a better community. And so... I ask all of you-- no, I implore you, to lend us the weight of formal recognition, to say out loud what we all already know in our hearts:

That we are people, and we are here, and we cannot go away. Wishing would not make it so.

[Softly,] Thank you.

[The assembly listens to Gregor closely, and as he speaks, all eyes are on him. They are a council well used to people skilled in oration; his polished demeanor does not surprise them, but it certainly doesn't hurt his argument in the least. At the very least, they regard him seriously, and appear to be holding onto every word.

When one member takes the microphone, she begins with pleasantries.]

Before we begin, we, the United Nations, would like to welcome you here. We appreciate the difficulty of your situation, and, in kind, appreciate your willingness to stand before us today. We hazard you against taking the world's reservations about your population lightly; we speak as one, unified voice here, but reflect the concerns of so many more.

To engage is a matter of not only the politics of your host country and the USSR, but the rest of the world as well, and we are on the precipice of unprecedented nuclear war, an eventuality that we must all prepare for in these trying times.

And, indeed, it is an eventuality that you yourselves must be steeling yourselves for. In what ways do you believe that your community and your country is prepared for nuclear war? Are there any skills unique to your population that may help prevent such a thing -- or, perhaps, skills that may help deal with it?
