De Chima
[While the producers of Maya's show have been quite pleased with her outfit choices so far, Maya still has come into the city without much of a wardrobe-- and without much experience in it, either. After talking with the stylists they've sent her on a mission; take on De Chima, and bring back new clothes she likes for them to put together into outfits on set.
It's not a terrible mission, but she's been a bit short sighted and might have forgotten to invite pretty much anyone else to come along with her. So after sending out a few If you're not busy, feel free to join me! texts, she can be found in De Chima's biggest mall, sometimes wandering around as though lost-- and other times, seeming quite at home sorting through clothes to try.]

When he approaches, though, her smile's a little more genuine; really, she's pretty glad to have people like Kaneda to hang out with.]
Hey! Over here!
no subject
Not that he didn't like it, obviously, he just isn't' used to someone actually utilizing fashion. It seemed like such a faraway thing back home. Congrats Maya you get him jacketless in his yellow shirt and pants as always.]
Well now look who dressed up!
[He hops onto the sidewalk she's standing on, COMPLETELY and utterly J-walking across that street NO REGRETS as he stuffs his hands in his pockets.]
no subject
D'ya like it? It's colder here, so I figured I'd wear something as cool as the weather.
[HEHEHE. Get it?]
no subject
[Said with that signature flash of a smile. He tilts his head to his right, as if gesturing which way they're going to go.
It was a quaint little noodle shop he'd found recently, not too far from the park. It must've just opened--it was almost impossible to find unless you stumbled upon it.]
Hope you're hungry!
no subject
I'm pretty much always hungry. Don't worry.
[No shame.]
no subject
What a coincidence. Me too.
[You two are going to get along juuuuust fine.]
The bowls at this place are almost as big as your head, so you better not be overselling yourself.
no subject
Bowls? Like, noodle bowls?
no subject
Udon.
no subject
Yes!
[Before she hops on her toes, her pace quickening.]
What are you doing? You're walking too slow!
[Excitedly, she grabs him by the arm, trying to coax him into walking faster.]
Udon is the best!
[Ramen might be her favourite but udon is an awesome second.]
no subject
Someone's excited!
But then again, he can't blame her. Finding Japanese food here is so rare, his reaction was pretty much the same when he found it.]
Yeah! And it's cheap, too!
What kind do you go for? [He puts a hand behind his head, in thought.]
Chikara? No, maybe Kitsune...
no subject
[Definitely, definitely. She remembers slurping heaping helpings of noodles across the table from Mia and Mia dropping her leftover pieces of inari in Maya's bowl. She grins so brightly at Kaneda.]
Where'd you even find this place? I haven't found anything like that yet in Heropa!
no subject
[Although HOW he found it...]
I've been scoping out Nonah for awhile now. Learning the ins and outs, you know? Shortcuts, hideouts, things like that.
You can't even see the place, it's so hidden. The only thing on the front is a sign that says 'Open'.
no subject
[Little niches in the city were always the ones Mia ended up bringing her to. Their favourite burger stand, even, had been just that-- no more than a little food truck.]
You know how to pick 'em, don'tcha, Kanekyun?
no subject
As they walk, he takes her down one of Nonah's lesser traveled streets, making a few turns into what would seemingly lead to an alley--but it doesn't. It's another street, and surprisingly just as bustling as the ones before it. A shortcut? Maybe. It was the only way Kaneda had found it, after all. It's an odd little street, as if all the businesses that didn't quite have a place next to a coffee shop or a convenience store gathered here. On the corner? An oddly seedy 'psychic' who could read your fortunes for $20 dollars, cash up front, and 'healings' whatever that meant. Honestly, Kaneda sidestepped it a bit--he'd certainly had his fair share of psychics, he didn't need to PAY to get their attention half the time.
A curiosity shop as well, with exotic rugs hanging along the outside, as well as some Japanese(?) knick knacks. 'Pieces of Stonehenge', 'rare opals', and 'Adamantite' in cute little boxes displayed with gaudy price tags that even Kaneda had raised an eyebrow at. Across the street was a medicine shop, home remedies that could cure everything from a head cold to a broken arm--provided you did as the old lady told you to. And from the looks of it, she was ready to beat that into your head the moment you walked in.
Kaneda leads her past these, though, right next to the Curiosity Shop, where it appeared to be a dark grey brick wall.
It's only upon closer inspection (and a small sign that says 'Open') that there's a door there, Kaneda smiling at her as he walks towards it to open, yellow ambient light spilling out, stairs leading down to another door as he holds the first one open for her.]
no subject
But she doesn't make a comment on any of these; no, she only seems interested in this new path that Kaneda has made, and she eyes, the door he opens with the curiosity of a juvenile cat-- not blindly curious, but not willing to back down, either. She looks at him, raising a brow, before heading down the stairs.]
You're not taking me somewhere shady, are you? Aren't you too young to get tied up in trouble?
[she says, as if she's never in trouble. She waits for him at the second door, hand on the door knob.]
no subject
But his body language shifts, taken aback by the 'too young' thing. THAT HURTS, MAYA!]
Hey! I can handle myself!
[That hand makes a mad grip for that door ahead. When open, a wall of warm air hits them, a contrast to the slightly cooler air that Nonah tended to sport this time of year. And if the heat didn't overtake you, the atmosphere certainly did. It seemed to pride itself on the Asian aesthetic, screens to separate booths on one end, and a bar where the chefs prepared food on the other. It was a familiar, homely place, and the smell of the food would ring a bell to anyone who'd ever eaten Japanese. Fried tofu, warm broth, spices, tea, meat...the smell of vegetables. All of it seemed to engulf you as you walked in. It was quiet, as if the only customers this place got were the ones who dared to walk down those steps.
A justified reward, to be honest.]
no subject
It smells like home.
It smells like home during holidays or festivals, when Maya could benefit from not having to cook for herself, because there would be so much food that no one minded the master's daughter poking in and sharing. It smells like sitting next to Mia during new years. It smells like things she missed but hadn't even realised she missed, because being home had always been so hard for her.
She hesitates.]
W-wow.
[Quieter than she's ever been with Kaneda.]
You weren't kidding.
no subject
Neo Tokyo didn't have the best food quality--World War III had ruined any and all soil and vegetation--and they certainly couldn't import like they used to. If you found a restaurant that smelled like this...you were in heaven.
This wasn't just 'home' to Kaneda, this was what he wished 'home' COULD be like. And he's not entirely sure if that's a good or bad thing yet.
He walks up behind her, though, hands in his pockets as he smiles. There's no cocky smirk, no annoying little obnoxious drawl to his voice. It's almost as quiet as Maya's actually, as he looks up at the ambient light, dark and homely. Letting out a sigh as he speaks.]
I have my moments.
[But then it picks right back up, walking past.]
Just -wait- til you see the size of the bowls.
no subject
All depends on if these bowls are as impressive as you say they are.
[It would seem she's back to normal just as fast.]
I'm not impressed ye--
[Her stomach cuts her off with a loud growl, to which she snorts and covers her mouth. Woops. She hurries to keep pace with him, since it seems they should probably get to eating soon.]
no subject
Guess that's my curse. I'm always the favourite.
[But his brows raise at her stomach growl, the smile unable to stop itself from splitting his face, arm slapping itself around her shoulders as he leads her to the bar area. The stools were a little high, but he's sure he can help her up if she needs it.]
Then it's time I prove it, yeah?
no subject
She doesn't seem the slightest bit bothered by his smile, though; if anything, she's more encouraged.]
I'm a lady of distinguished tastes, you know. [Yeah right.] It's gonna be pretty hard to convince me, so good luck!
no subject
Distinguished tastes, huh? Didn't know I was in the presence of a conn...con...
...master.
[Shut up.
His hands rest on his hips as she swirls to face him, looking pretty satisfied with her efforts before taking a seat himself.]
Kitsune, you said?
HERE WE GO I'M A GOOB
[She pronounces it slowly and clearly-- not condescendingly, but as if she was explaining the word to Pearl. It doesn't bother her that he struggles with language at all-- it makes sense, really.]
That's right. What kind are you gettin'?
no subject
[Well, that's about 2/3rds of it. Points for trying, right?]
English is so stupid.
[But he smiles at her decision, thinking it over. He SHOULD get something with veggies in it...]
Chikara, for me.
[To which he hails over the guy behind the bar, eagerly switching completely to Japanese to order for them. And mayyyyyybe asking to slip another piece of fried tofu into Maya's Kitsune, just because.]
no subject
And to think, she'd been worried about feeling lonely in a whole new America.]
You know, if you don't want to speak English with me, you don't have to.
[She tells him, shrugging a shoulder. She's willing to accommodate; after all, that's what friends do, right?
...Besides, without Kurain's old texts to study, she'll run out of practice if she doesn't use it.]
