Boys and girls of every age, Wouldn't you like to see something strange

WHO: Imports
WHERE: Helix Station, Maurtia Falls
WHEN: Evening of 10/16
WHAT: Swear-In Ceremony, with a bonus Haunted House!
WARNINGS: Violence and other spoopy stuff.

The Festival

An orange moon slowly burns into life as the sun begins the last few moment's of it's descent, washing the sky in beautiful splashes of fading twilight hues. The white walls the Helix Station glow in the warm autumn light as throngs of costumed children and their families parade through the large front gate and into the festively decorated courtyard within.

Laughter and squeals of anticipation and delight ring out from the gaggle of children in a never ending chorus as their attentions dance between the kitsch decorations of gremlins and skeletons, to the ImPort Heroes in attendance. But at least the parents and guardians seem to be doing a good job of keeping the beaming or bashful kids from bothering ImPorts too much as you make your way into the facility. Though do be prepared for an autograph request or three. Unlike some of the previous Swear-Ins, this is no media circus. While there may be a reporter or two in the crowd, asking for a few quick shots with imports and their adoring fans, this gathering is for you and your new rosy cheeked best friends. Just a bit of seasonal fun and the added benefit of helping a local children's hospital by contributing to their charity.

Colorfully decorated stalls line the exterior of the courtyard, offering the attendees a wide variety of activities, entertainment, and gifts. While most of the stalls are managed by groups or individual imports contributing with their time and goodwill (mostly), several also offer refreshments and snacks manned by droids or volunteers from the hospital staff or children's family.

A few honorable mentions of ImPort run stalls:

-Hazel and the Doctor's Face Paintings
-Kanaya and Helena's Fangtastic Bobbing for Apples
-Manolo and Sabriel's Performance Cake Walk
-Stan's Photo Booth of Terror (And extortion)
-Lucifer's Mystic Magic Mirror of Mystery
-Fraiser and Kowalski's Totally Scary Puppy Petting Zoo

And of course there's also a stall with informative pamphlets and a chipper Government representative ready to register any willing imports and talk about the benefits inherent to doing so.

There are also plenty of open stalls if you want to add to festivities!

Just inside the main building, the lobby area and adjacent rooms open into the main area of the Haunted House. Despite the spooky imagery and haunting ambiance, this floor is rather tame. There may be a few motion sensor activated skeletons that pop up and startling the careless, but otherwise it's all kid friendly.

This however is NOT the case with the upper floors. Which prohibit native participation completely. If that doesn't chill your blood then the fact that you have to stop by a booth near the elevator to "check in" and received a warning that only those that are seeking a true test of terror should enter, might.

However the droid representative will NOT offer any additional information to imports, save that all participants will be given thirty minutes to escape before "time is up". They will NOT be telling anyone that:

-Immediately upon exiting the elevator, you will find yourself seeped in power dampening fog, leaving you de-powered.
-That the upper floors are inhabited by wandering animatronics with monstrous appearances that are programmed to hunt the imports trying to find their way out.
-As the thiry minutes tick by, the animatronics will become faster and hunt the imports with more tenacity and ever increasing perception. Early in the hunt it's possible to hide or avoid most animatronics. This becomes less effective as time goes by.
-Any imports that are unable to escape the animatronics will NOT be hurt. When an import is captured they will be hauled to a secret exit which ends in a shoot that deposits the character outside, near Stan's Photo booth. (Who might just have a series of photos depicting your character in various compromising states of terror.) However the participating imports will be unaware of the lack of danger they are in until this happens. Which means you might even see some imports being hauled off kicking and screaming into the darkness.

Imports that manage to evade the animatronics long enough to find their way out of the maze of corridors and rooms will find themselves in the haunted house lobby, where they will be presented with a plush version of one of the monsters that had been hunting them. Not so scary now, huh?

Attack on Helix Station

Just after midnight as the festivities hit full swing, several masked men slip over the wall and into the facility. While mostly concealed, to any ImPorts sharp enough to notice them, it quickly becomes apparent that these men are armed to the teeth and full of bad intentions. Moving with precision, skill before any import can alert the others, the gunmen take up positions to cause as much damage as possible. However as they ready their weapons an alarm blares through out the facility. In that brief moment of confusion the gunmen hesitate. And in the span of that hesitation, several security droids suddenly march out into the facility through side doors hefting snub nosed weapons cradled in their arms.

An electric blue flash suddenly illuminates the courtyard as a blast from one of the droid's stun weapons strikes one of the gunmen, who crumples.

And then chaos erupts.

Seeing them as the clear and present danger the gunmen focus their fire on the advancing security bots, but as several defense turrets pop out from concealed slots in the walls, their position quickly becomes untenable. While strong in numbers, the gunmen scatter into groups through out the facility to take cover. A few of them drop smoke grenades to cover their escape, but the blinding cloud is short lived. As contaminates are detected in the air, several purifiers cleverly disguised within the decorations will activate, drawing in the smoke and laying the terrorists' movements bare.

As the gloom recedes, Revan stalks forward out of the smoke, a sheathed katana clenched in one hand
and his expression blazing as he marches towards the nearest group of soldiers.

"WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!" his voice booms strangely loud, carrying over the entire courtyard with the force and command power of someone used to leading warriors into battle. "IMPORTS!" With a fluid motion he withdraws the sword and tosses the scabbard aside.

Little did these bastards know that they were ready. With a small army of Imports, comprised of RISE and volunteer security forces, at his back Revan gave a flourish of his blade before dashing forward.

Qubit | Unsettled | OTA (esp. to security personnel!)

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-18 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
The Stalls

[Once again, Qubit has put himself on security detail. But this time he did it prior to two hours before the event, so he's actually officially on staff this time. And so far, so good. At the start of the evening, he's mostly around the entrance, helping with whatever screening or scanning process they have set up there. As the night goes on, he can be found patrolling the event, checking on cameras and such from a tablet, and/or hanging out at vantage points. He may mingle a bit, but his real focus is on work.

He's not in costume, of course, but he does have a wireless earpiece (identical to the ones he'd have distributed among the rest of the security personnel beforehand), which he will use to request all-clears from them every hour or so. Sorry if anybody else on security gets tired of his voice.]

The Attack

[Being on the lookout for exactly this sort of thing, Qubit spots the terrorists a second or two before the alarm goes off. And while he's none too happy about there being a situation, he's pleased to see the droids and turrets (some of which he helped program) already responding to it. The assailants are at a clear disadvantage - as they should be.

Taking cover somewhere, he pulls up the cameras on his tablet and quickly scrolls through them to get a better look at their attackers. A preliminary sitrep will be good to have here. He puts a finger to his earpiece to broadcast to all the other ones.]

Qubit here. We've got a dozen or so hostiles on the premises, armed with assault rifles and smoke bombs at least. Droids are in pursuit - ah!

[The transmission cuts out for a second as someone finds a good angle to shoot at him from, forcing him to move to more different cover. As he's going, he opens a portal halfway through the gun, cleanly bisecting it in between shots. The next shot backfires loudly, and the guy practically throws the remaining half of the weapon in his haste to get away from it. That done, Qubit resumes transmission.]

Give priority to civilian evac. Let the droids engage first wherever it's an option. Understood?

[... and following that initial message, he'll be helping to get people out, especially anyone who's pinned down or injured and needs fast evac. Teleportals are convenient like that.]

[Other ideas? Or just wanna bug Qb for somethin'? Hit me up!]

[Jacob doesn't recognize Qubit from the Network- their last and only conversation was through text. All he sees is a guy in civilian clothes with deeply improbable hair who appears to be part of the security network. Another of Revan's allies, maybe?]

Excuse me. Are you part of the security here?
superposition: ((william hartnell eat your heart out))

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-18 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Qubit doesn't recognize him either, since that was over a month ago. But he nods.]

Yes. Is there a problem?
darkpants_warmfeeling: (Shoulder)

[personal profile] darkpants_warmfeeling 2015-10-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Jacob shakes his head.]

No problem. But I work in security. And I've been to enough Swear-Ins to know how important it is. I was hoping you could describe some of what Revan has set up to protect this event.
superposition: (Through hell and high tide)

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-21 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Well, I can't go into too much detail, for obvious reasons, but a lot of it is what you'd expect. Cameras, motion sensors, electronic countermeasures, and the like. People on the ground, of course. And in the event of an incident, the facility has an autonomous defense grid, as well. Recently upgraded. [By yours truly, says the little note of pride in his voice.]
darkpants_warmfeeling: (Regret)

[personal profile] darkpants_warmfeeling 2015-10-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
A defense grid? Nice. Let's hope we don't have to see it in action tonight.

[Jacob says, blissfully oblivious to where this evening is headed.]

What about countermeasures against chemical weapons? I think we all know how much damage gas can do at one of these things.

[Jacob has noticed that when it comes to imPorts under attack, the worst threats are the ones they can't fight their way past. It doesn't matter how hard you can punch a gas cloud.]
superposition: (For idle hands to do)

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-25 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[A somber nod.] We certainly do. I was there, unfortunately. But we have emergency air purifiers at intervals about the grounds. Any contaminants or unknown substances in the air, and they'll actively scrub them out. And that includes smoke, in the event of a fire, which is a nice little bonus.
darkpants_warmfeeling: (Default)

[personal profile] darkpants_warmfeeling 2015-10-27 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Jacob nods back, and not just because of the tech being described. Qubit speaks with certainty and authority for someone who just started on Swear-In security, and that in turn boosts Jacob's confidence in the event's defences.]

Sounds like this event is solid. It's good to see- especially coming from imPorts more than the government. I'd rather have us taking care of our own than hoping for the military to come through for us.

[He unfolds his arm, and holds a hand out to shake.]

Jacob Taylor. Thanks for helping out with this.
superposition: (I think I can rely on you)

[personal profile] superposition 2015-11-02 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Qubit shakes it. He has a textbook handshake, firm and professional, but lasting no longer than absolutely necessary.]

Qubit. It's the least I could do. [As an afterthought-] That name sounds familiar, haven't we talked before? You were with, uh... [He snaps his fingers a few times, trying to jog his memory.]

[ Guess who's actually bored enough to try and hack into the security video feed just for fun?

This gal.

Which is to say, Kasumi's still standing aloof, away from the hustle and bustle and activity of the stalls, but still close enough to watch out of the corner of her eye... and her hood. Meanwhile, her omni-tool is glows orange on her arm as she pokes around to see if she can case the surveillance. Again, just for fun.

She will, at least, entertain the question of a small child who, in awe, asks her what it is, to which she just answers: ]

It's magic.

[ It's not. But it's a good enough answer to send the kid gleefully running back to whence he came, to blab about the magical orange thing he just saw an imPort use! ]

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-21 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Guess who's monitoring the security video feed? This guy.

Being something of a hacker himself (one of his many tech-related talents), Qubit knows a thing or two about countermeasures. Revan's tech was advanced, but not without vulnerabilities, so he'd added some bits and bobs here and there to address them. Basically this means two things: 1) most of the holes Kasumi will find have already been plugged, and 2) Qubit gets alerts when there's suspicious activity in the system. When he looks into the logs, there's enough evidence to support that yes, a hacking attempt is happening right now.

He doesn't have much to go on, of course - whoever this is, they're not stupid - but he's able to narrow down the source to "somewhere on the premises," and from there it's a matter of checking the cameras to see if he can spot them. Granted, they might not be visibly using a computer, but even so it's worth looking. When a quick look there doesn't reveal anything, he gives an update over the radio - "possible hacking attempt, I'm looking into it" - before taking to the courtyard.

It doesn't take long for him to spot someone who he's sure wasn't on camera. If it weren't for the ... hologram? lighting up her arm, though, she'd probably blend right in with the shadows. He glances at the nearest cameras as he approaches her. But they haven't been tampered with, this is just a blind spot between them.

Now, why would you hide in a blind spot if you weren't doing something shady? He doesn't really have proof she's the one behind the attempt, but his gut tells him she is, and he's a very good guesser. He approaches casually, hands in his pockets.]

That's an interesting device you've got there. What is that?
stealwithit: (023 *)

[personal profile] stealwithit 2015-10-21 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Kasumi, on her part, is actually quite impressed by how much trouble she's having cracking into the surveillance. It only figures that whoever's been put in charge means business -- which, you know, she's fine with, especially given the rather colorful histories of Swear-ins as of late. She could keep pressing if she really cared to, but since she'd only thought to do this for fun, she decides it's not really worth the trouble. Clearly, they're in good hands here.

And silently, she thanks the gods that whoever this guy is on their side, and not with Maurtia Falls' criminal underbelly, because that would've made Kasumi's hobbies a lot tougher.

She shuts her omni-tool off, effectively terminating the algorithms she'd set to try and break in, just in time for someone with one hell of a hairstyle to approach her. To his question, she offers a grin. ]

Wouldn't you like to know?
superposition: ((tight-lipped))

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-21 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Qubit meets her grin with a tight-lipped, unamused smile. It's just a skosh too early to play the "I'm with security" card - no telling how she'll react when he does.]

Yes, as a matter of fact, I would.
stealwithit: (011 *)

[personal profile] stealwithit 2015-10-24 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The tilt of her head that she gives sort of says it all. She's gonna play hard to get. ]

And if I said that was a secret?
superposition: ((assume i know something you don't))

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, first, I wouldn't believe you. Second, I'd start guessing. [He shifts his weight from one foot to the other, pointing casually to the arm the omni-tool was on a second ago.] It's tech, that's obvious. Holo-interface, so fairly advanced. My main question is, is it just for hacking surveillance systems, or can it play Tetris, too?
stealwithit: (035)

[personal profile] stealwithit 2015-10-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)

[ Caught red-handed. Kasumi supposes she kind of deserves it, given the fact that she only did so because that's her strange idea of fun. But more importantly, standing in front of her is a man who's developed a system Kasumi couldn't crack as easily as she normally does. She's gotta respect that. She's also gotta respect the nonchalant way he seems to be going about this. Because he definitely could've -- I don't know, apprehended her or something. (Although there's nothing saying he couldn't still do that.) And she's also gotta respect that, wow, his hair is seriously defying gravity. ]

It can play Tetris, sure, if I'd bother putting such an ancient relic of a game on it.
superposition: ((what are we talking about?))

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-25 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[HA! He was totally right. Chalk another one up for his intuition. Qubit folds his arms. The nonchalance is something of a defense mechanism - he's not supernaturally durable or anything, so in many cases it's better to come off as nonthreatening. Besides, more flies with honey, etc.]

[Deadpan] Cute. Now, I can think of a number of reasons you might want access, but none of them paint you in a very flattering light.

[At the low end, she's some kind of snoop or paparazzo. Middling, she's a burglar. And over at the far end, she's a terrorist or supervillain, looking for a good place to plant a bomb. At this point he has no way of knowing.]

So: you get one chance to explain yourself. Of course, if you'd rather waive that, I can always assume the worst.

[Clark doesn't actually realize he knows the person that's almost been shot until he's already running towards him, but that wouldn't have made a difference anyway. All he sees is him doing some sort of... trick with his hand before the gun literally splits in two. Clark doesn't even think twice about the power, he's seen weirder at home and he's definitely seen weirder powers in here. But the way the gun backfires on the person holding it makes him frown slightly.]

Are you okay? Did they get you? [He knows they didn't, but it's always safer to ask. Safer for his secret identity, that is.] What did you do to their gun? Will it hurt them?

It's not going to hurt anyone else. That's what matters.

[Even if the shooter were to lose a finger or two (which he didn't), Qubit would still consider that getting off lightly. Anyway, he takes half a second to size Clark up in the meantime. He's a bigger guy, and not immediately panicking, which may make him useful helping with evac. Even more so if-]

Are you an imPort? What's your power?

[personal profile] andaway 2015-10-28 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Clark sighs inwardly. He's been incredibly lucky: not many people ask. He wonders why that is. Perhaps some people just aren't used to thinking of everyone around them as a metahuman, that has to be a hard thing to adapt to when there were no metahumans to speak of. Either way, Clark usually gets away with simply being Clark, innocuous imPort who doesn't use powers. When they ask, though, he's kind of cornered into a semi lie.]

I can tell where any kind of news is happening, no matter how far away. If you really need help, though, I know how to get a hold of Superman.

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-29 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, he certainly found some news today. Qubit stiffens at the mention of that name, though. (He can envision it perfectly. This situation would be downright trivial for someone like him. A red blur, and it'd be over before it started-) But it's brief; his composure returns half a second later.]

That won't be necessary. We have this under control. [Or they will shortly, whichever.]
andaway: (C [oh])

[personal profile] andaway 2015-10-29 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Clark would usually take that and roll with it: he really doesn't like just barging in wherever other people are already working on it. He's here to help, not to basically take over. But again, Qbit's reaction to the name 'Superman' rubs him the wrong way.]

Are you sure? If he was around... well, it'd be faster and less people would get hurt.

[He's right, you know. But - no, there are objective reasons not to call him, too. Other than the subjective I'm not ready to deal with him yet. (Still?)]

I'm sure. If he swoops in now and saves the day on his own, what happens if he's not there next month? No. We need these people to understand, in no uncertain terms -

[A bullet ricochets off the wall nearby. Qubit takes a half-second to look out and locate the shooter, then portals him such that he falls through the floor and comes out partway up the wall, landing on one of his buddies and knocking them both to the ground.]

- that none of us will tolerate this.

[personal profile] andaway 2015-10-30 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Clark doesn't look convinced, but he nods anyway. He's right, so he can't argue with that. It's just the permanent feeling that there's something beneath the surface and he can't scratch at it enough to get it. He's never been good at leaving mysteries unsolved. He wishes he actually had the power to sense the news.]

Alright then. How can I help?
superposition: ((talk to me))

[personal profile] superposition 2015-10-30 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[You know, funny thing about a healing wound... the more you scratch it, the longer it takes to heal.]

Work on getting civilians out. Move fast, but stay low, and stick to cover where you can. [That's just common sense, but it bears repeating.] If you can't reach an exit, then get them indoors. RISE headquarters is the best-fortified place in the building. Think you can do that? [Not asked in a condescending way, he genuinely wants to know.]
