Keep us from saying anything

WHO: ImPorts!
WHERE: Heropa, Florida.
WHEN: September 13th, from 6 PM until 11 PM.
WHAT: Registration in motion... among other things.
WARNINGS: None anticipated; please let us know if this should be edited.

" The new frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises -- it is a set of challenges. It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them. It appeals to their pride, not to their pocketbook -- it holds out the promise of more sacrifice instead of more security. But I tell you the new frontier is here, whether we seek it or not. "
( from jfk's speech "the new frontier," 7/15/1960. )

An autumnal festival might seem somewhat out of place in sweltering Florida heat, however those in attendance and have helped arrange the set-up of this Swear-In are getting into the swing of things. The atmosphere isn't overtly ecstatic or loud as previous Swear-Ins have been, and those paying close attention can get an underlying sense of tension coming from the Federal agents making their rounds as this event's security. Unlike the previous ceremonies -- and for such a smaller event -- there are more agents than what might be considered the norm.

There are a number of festivities to partake in, though; booths have been set up to host activities ranging from pig lifting (lift a boar over your head and you win it!), guessing how many eggs are in a large crate, wood chopping, pumpkin pie eating contests, horse shoe throwing and quite a few more... with a mysterious fascination with all things Pumpkin Spice. Other activities include "Spot the Communist", a small maze with cardboard cutouts of people where participants need to guess which one is the Communist and who's a patriotic American citizen. There are some pamphlets that can be found around the other booths entitled "COMMUNISM: What is it? And how can we stop it?" which could provide some hints on which cardboard cutouts are a dreadful Russian spy in disguise. (Hint: the girl with the molecular biology textbook is quite suspicious.)

The number of media representatives is a small group this time, their main focus on a specific booth with a platform and microphone. Every few minutes a local from the town steps forward, speaking into the microphone about their concerns about the ever present Red threat. Behind them a large poster is erected, practically looming over them foreboding as they talk openly about the possibility of nuclear disaster, losing their children, the American dream and everything else this country has ever provided for them. At one point, an angry local rushes the stage, snatching the microphone and gesturing to the imPorts among them in a furious motion.

"What we need is for imPorts to do their jobs! They have been so busy fighting with each other and causing trouble they've forgotten about us! I'll be damned before I see this country fall to stinkin' Commies because of these spoiled folk!"

There are, however, posters around representing imPorts fighting against the Red Threat surrounding the stage. They're different enough from the imPorts to lend the artists credible deniability, but included on the posters are the Green Glow, pictured without his symbol, ring, or mask (they've got the nose all wrong!), the Steel Saviour in red, white and blue, the Sherrif who has a bewildering goatee, Roaring Leopard in yellow and black, and something labeled merely as Armour Guy, inspired by a new spat of newcomers but with patches all over the armour in every shade they seemed to be able to think of.

Also available by the stage is a small podium with a government worker heading it, a sign above proclaiming: "DO YOU, IMPORT, WISH TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE RED THREAT? SIGN UP HERE! Once imPorts edge closer, they'll learn that they're seeking out anti-communist spokespeople to be featured in commercials, art, and more! In order to commemorate this, they will name a major highway after the imPort chosen. Sign up here!

Last, but not least, the government will have booths available for signing up for ASSIGNMENTS, though it's not necessary for imPorts to be present at the Swear-In to sign up later. Should they choose to sign up to provide local aid, they will receive a short debriefing, but those who sign up for occupation will get a small, sealed file to look at later... how curious!

( Please state your character's official status -- REGISTERED or UNSETTLED -- in the subject header of your thread. )

A. - Through the Looking Glass

[ Stepping off from her ride into a crowd wasn't exactly Alice's greater idea. She had gotten the whole spiel and nonsense earlier. Heroes. Her idea of heroes would have been in the old stories of King Arthur and his knights, not what appeared to be regular people. Alice didn't feel as if she fit the term very well.

Alice was not known to be one of the more social people on the streets of London and this was no different. She found the complicity of her blood stained apron and knife a little unnerving. She hadn't been questioned about it, not yet, and was starting to wonder if anyone around her was just as mad as she was.

What the hell was communism, she wasn't sure. And yet for looking certainly unnerving herself, Alice was oddly unnerved herself from the gathering. She probably stood there for far too long, observing and looking for a quicker way to get away from people and move on. After a moment, Alice took one unsure step and decided to make her way through the crowd, bloody mess or not. ]

B. - Red Scare

[ It isn't very lady-like to speak about politics -- not that Alice really listened to adults go on about what was lady-like. She practically stumbles over from one such gentleman prattling on about the "red threat" and more about these "communists".

Alice was convinced that communists were just some sort of nuisance than a threat, from the way she couldn't pass through without people trying to get her to stop. She had barely spoke to anyone when she arrived and finally managed to speak up, frank and short- ]

I'll be happy to entertain a lecture when I don't have to contend to every other person shouting at me, thank you. Let me pass.

[ "What we need is for imPorts to do their jobs!" That was enough to earn an eyeroll. Similar things were always shouted any time she passed by factories or construction sights. ]

C. - Roaming

[ When Alice isn't stopped, she can be wandering around, standing out like a sore thumb in her attire and attempts to quickly walk by, her head low. Maybe it is unusual behavior, maybe it isn't. A few instances, she's brushed by others a little too hard than she meant to. ]

[Alice wouldn't be the first imPort Qubit had met who showed up covered in blood, but she would be the first one who showed up carrying a bloody kitchen knife. And given her furtive behavior, she catches his attention before very long at all. He's here specifically on the lookout for threats, after all. So he breaks away from wherever he was standing and approaches.]

Excuse me. Miss?

[ Alice is almost prepared for another full out lecture about communists, yet again, by a stranger. Although, this time, she would say it's a nice change of pace someone wasn't waving papers in her face. At least she doesn't raise her knife as a warning. Thankfully, by now, she's calm enough to where she just stops in her steps as this stranger steps out in front of her.

Little does she know, it's something she was actually hoping for someone would at least question her and that was her appearance. ]

Yes, sir?

[All right, she's not immediately trying to flee or stab him, that's a good start. Now how to phrase this... he'd really rather not set her off, so openly saying "you look like you just murdered someone" might not be the best course of action.]

My name's Qubit. I'm with security. [More or less.] Are you having any trouble? Someone try to hurt you?

[The invitation to claim self-defense is deliberate. Regardless of what actually happened, it'll be easier to keep her cooperative if she believes he's on her side from the outset. And if it does turn out someone's bleeding out right now, she'll be the one who knows where.]

[About time. That's the only thing Alice can really think at the moment. There was something utterly disconcerting that no one had bothered to ask Alice about the knife or the blood. Even through the ImPort process of being pulled into the city and given the slight run down of "heroes" and such, no one bothered to even ask.

Even Alice thought that was a little mad and that said a lot. ]

Not here. [ She takes a breath, deciding to be a little more specific. ] Here as in, this city. In the city prior before? Yes.

[ Well, not really a city, Wonderland didn't really count as one and he didn't need need to know about that and how suddenly Alice seemed to be here with an artifact of Wonderland, a literal piece of her mind in her right hand.

Bumby, on the other hand... well. That actually counted, but shoving people into oncoming trains didn't earn as much blood. Unfortunately. ]

I'm disappointed, I must admit. It's a little frightening that blood and a knife wouldn't even earn a bat of an eyelash. At least someone has said something. I mean, really.

[ At least she's honest. Brutally, even. ]

["The city before"? She can't be from Earth-α, can she? That's not really the immediate concern, though, he doesn't like how blasé she is about all this.]

Yes, well. They might just be worried you're going to use it on them if they say anything. While we're on the subject, did you hurt someone?
